The Shacklewell Arms | LONDON IN STEREO

With live music most nights, weekend club nights (often themed, always great), plenty of screens for sports in the main bar and a tropical covered garden, there’s basically no one that couldn’t make themselves at home in this Dalston favourite.

Check the site for more information on food options too because they’re pretty great.

The Myrrors @ Shacklewell Arms, live music review: epic desert ...

The Myrrors are not a band that is going to send their audience vaulting over the barrier, instead they take the assembled on a journey through mystic deserts in a trance-like state.

With vocals at a premium, the band relies on their instruments to tell their stories and lead their audience.

As the performance reaches its climax, the band seem to have grown into it, with songs that feature much more detail and build to crescendos that do much to drown out the chatter and darken the phones.

Whilst The Myrrors performance was certainly not the most entertaining show I’ve ever seen, the band are without doubt a talented bunch, even if they do spend the majority of their time on stage staring at their instruments (or in the case of the lead singer, at his pedal board).

All in all the band should be praised for trying something different in a genre that has enormous popularity at the moment, rather than just going with the zeitgeist.

Review analysis
food   drinks   location

The Shacklewell Arms has become one of the go-to venues for US bands making early London appearances, and a reliable host for indie-label seasons – Trashmouth, the label that brought us the Fat White Family, has a forthcoming season there.

Bar: There’s a limited bar in the back room, but the Shacklewell Arms is a fully fuctioning pub in its front half, with football on the telly and a changing array of real ales at the bar.

Overall: The Shacklewell Arms is part of the east London triumvirate – completed by the Old Blue Last and the Sebright Arms – that has seen the centre of indie gig gravity in the capital shift decisively away from Camden.

The stage set up is truly peculiar – the drum kit gets set up in an alcove at the back of the stage, which means that half the time you can’t see there’s a drummer with the band.

As London pub venues go, it’s not as rewarding an experience as the Lexington, but for what it offers – the chance to see exciting young bands in a small space – it more than earns its keep.

Shacklewell Arms | Music in Shacklewell, London

The bjoux live back room still smells bizarrely of mould and the courtyard smoking area – complete with broken fountain and faded, crudely painted murals – might nix its chances of a Michelin star for music venues, but this down-at-heels gem is already an institution, just two years after throwing open its doors to a rampantly eclectic live music programme.

The studio next door ensures the patronage of a stream of local musicians and industry ace faces.
