REVIEW: La Petite Bretagne, Dalston

Review analysis
food   menu   desserts

Buckwheat flour galettes, crepes and French breakfasts make a welcome change from smashed avo on toast.

With Pancake Day fast approaching, it’s handy to know who gives great crepe.

there are options: a traditional French breakfast of toast, butter and jam, fresh fruit salad, maple syrup pancakes and a croissant, freshly baked patisserie or a gigantic full English.

Traditional crepe options start with lashings of Emmental cheese and ham, various combinations adding mushroom, spinach, tomato and pesto.

Desserts (of course, you’ll find room) start with the classic butter, sugar and lemon crepe, growing steadily more decadent with fillings like white chocolate, Speculoos, salted caramel and raspberry coulis.

Newcomer Wines Dalston | Bars and pubs in Kingsland, London

Austrian wine: it’s a thing.

By day a bottle shop, by night a fairly chichi wine bar, Newcomer claims (and we’ve no reason to doubt it) to stock the biggest selection of Austrian wine and beer in London.

But Dalston hasn’t (yet) turned into Islington: it’s a long way from wine bar saturation point, and Newcomer definitely has a niche as a cute love letter to its co-founders’ homeland.

I’ll confess that I’m not big on the dry white wines that are Austria’s speciality, but my Jurtschitsch pinot noir was a minor revelation, with a light mineral come-on that segued into unexpected depths.

If you don’t care what accent your wine speaks with, it’s a little hard to be bothered about Newcomer’s alleinstellungsmerkmal (that’s German for USP).

Pancakes at La Petite Bretagne

food

Two crepes, a salad and a drink at this trendy little pancake spot in Dalston. We know Pancake Day is around the corner, but we don't think you need that excuse to gorge yourself silly with crêpes.

A little slice of Brittany has landed in Dalston and we’ve got a pretty perfect reason for you to go and pay it a visit – a sweet crêpe, a savoury crêpe, a side salad and a drink for over 60 percent less than usual (now £9.95, was £25.80).

Authentic French crêperies are few and far between in London, and let’s be honest, whenever we try to perfect pancakes at home, they either end up burnt or on the floor in a stodgy heap.

Catering to the palates of meat-eaters, veggies and those that are gluten-free, (see full menu here ) this cosy café offers classic savoury combinations as well as sweet delights.

Bid adieu to run-of-the-mill, crêpes and taste the flavours of France at La Petite Bretagne.
