As you head north of London’s city center to Dalston Lane, where Kingsland Road becomes Stoke Newington Road, you may notice yourself surrounded by a multitude of Turkish restaurants.

Named for Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul Restaurant specializes in meat — lots and lots of meat.

Some hot and cold mezze starters can be expected at a Turkish restaurant — think dishes with yogurt and eggplant, like babaganoush — and then the parade of meat dishes begins: shish kebab of chicken and lamb, kofte (a kind of meatball), doner kebab, chicken wings, adana kebab (a kind of mincemeat skewer), lamb ribs, and much, much more.

If the swooping ottoman lights and the grand painting of the Bosphorous Bridge don't give it away, the food certainly should - it's Turkish all the way.

Mezze options include baba ganoush, tabbouleh, spinach borek, falafel, Turkish sausage with halloumi, and kuzu ciger - freshly diced lamb's liver with an onion salad.

The mains go big on things from the grlll - think mixed, shish and kofte kebabs, marinated lamb chops, chicken wings and fish cooked over coals.

Further traditional Turkish dishes include stuffed vine leaves, meat-stuffed aubergine, an aubergine and meat casserole and a range of pide - Turkish pizzas here topped with things like Turkish sausage, minced lamb with garlic, pepper, tomatoes and parsley, or feta, parsley and sliced tomato.
