Less than a year after their launch and a series of summer pop ups, Enrique Vivas and Jorge Felizardo, co-founders of Del74 — the self-anointed “Rockin’est taco bar” in London, — have announce they will launch their second site and bring their “authentic Mexican inspired madness” to Dalston on 23 November.

The new site at 129 Kingsland High Street, close to Dalston Kingsland Station, will serve a clutch of new dishes, including tortas (Mexican sandwiches), an array of new tacos, tostadas and bar snacks such as the new, wildly-named “Kick ass” Del 74 tamarind Chile Morita bad ass chicken wings.

Del74 Dalston will be open for lunch/brunch from Tuesday to Sunday, including the dishes named above, plus a classic huevos rancheros, enfrijoladas and Del 74 signature home made chipotle chile gluten free corn-bread with salmon and avocado.

Del74 is all about “honest Mexican food made with love:” the duo will continue to use traditional recipes handed down from Vivas’ Aunt Patty, “custodian of the family kitchen secrets.”

Thus, in their words: “The aim of the new Del74 pitch up is not to create a contrived branded space but to provide its community with an independent, slightly raw charm alongside the highest quality of taco enjoyment.

Tacos & sharing bottles of mezcal?

Yes Del74 are opening a second site in Dalston, which is bigger and better than ever before.

Expect a menu of tacos and tostadas alongside some totally new dishes including tortas (those Mexican sandwiches), bar snacks (think tamarind & chile morita bad ass chicken wings), and a brunch/lunch offering with classic huevos rancheros, enfrijoladas and Del 74 signature home made chipotle chile gluten-free cornbread with salmon & avocado all on the menu.

When it comes to the booze, they’ve got pay as you pour sharing mezcal bottles and their classic Acapulco shrimp cocktail, as well as those all important margaritas.

And if Del74 know anything, it’s how to get the party started so we’re expecting bangin’ tunes and good vibes all round.

The slapdash fried tortilla used as the base of the brisket tostada displayed the same stodgy, overly crunchy problems as the tortilla chips accompanying the guacamole.

The tortillas used in all the tacos this time around were oddly bland and unmemorable, but this was preferable to the dumpster fire effort used in the plain quesadilla above.

The tortillas used in the tacos this time around were of better quality.

As with the tacos, the tortilla in the steak quesadilla was less offensive this time around.

I suspect its existence is due to something much more mundane – despite its name, Tacos del 74 is more of a bar than a restaurant.

And you’re liable to find one of them outside Del 74 on any given night, such is the popularity of their raucous blend of tacos, cocktails, and music….

There are, however, a few different things going on with the menu, to whit, THE NEW STUFF New dishes include as selection of tortas (Mexican sandwiches) and an array of new tacos, tostadas, and bar snacks such as the new Del 74 tamarind chile morita ‘bad ass’ chicken wings.

And underpinning all of that, there is of course, THE CLASSIC STUFF Okay, ‘classic’ might be a strong word for a place that’s been open for a year, but these are the traditional dishes made to recipes handed down from showrunner Enrique’s Mexican Aunt Patty.

NOTE: Del 74 Dalston is open now, and is walk-in only – though they accept bookings for parties of 6 or more.

This is a taco joint, so it’s high energy.

These guys are gunning to join the ranks of London’s best tacos with their cochinita pibil served with guacamole and pink pickled onions.

They’re also doing Mexican sandwiches – or tortas – at lunchtime, with steak, chicken or ‘veggie tinga’ fillings (the latter is made with everyone’s favourite pulled pork substitute – the jackfruit).

London is on a taco trip and long may it last.

The vibe here is rough and ready in the best possible way, just like a lot of taco spots in Mexico.
