The Blacksmiths is a recently renovated pub situated on the outskirts of the historical city of Chichester in the old village of Donnington, West Sussex.

Restored in a relaxed and comfortable style with a few quirky twists, guests can enjoy the blazing fire and homely charm of the anvil bar or the snug elegance of the dining room.

There are also three uniquely furnished double bedrooms and a large garden area with outdoor seating, fire pits and our own herb and salad garden.

Located close to the Chichester canal towpath, The Blacksmiths is a perfect stop off point for a refreshing pint, or perhaps an extended afternoon on the terrace.

We also have dog friendly eating and drinking areas, So whether you are visiting by bike, boot or boat – we look forward to welcoming you.

A sale inventory of 1669 describes the property thus:- One messuage, four acres of arable land, one wooded parcel of land, one forge anvil and tack, two mares one in foal and at this date was purchased by one Henry Springett Lockyer, a blacksmith of the parish of Knockholt, who on his deathbed in 1703 bequeathed the property, then described solely as a blacksmith’s forge and dwelling, to his wife Naomi, also recorded as a blacksmith.

Naomi Lockyer’s maiden name was Ward, and in 1729 the property was purchased by one Marcus Ward, a beer retailer and blacksmith of the parish.

The Ward family had for many years owned a registered ale house situated near the forge, known as the Anvil and later the Blacksmith’s Arms, which was badly damaged by fire and demolished in 1721.

For many years, Marcus Ward continued his trade as a blacksmith, while his wife Eleanor ran the Inn.

Watson was for many years a crier and post-master of the village and parish of Cudham, and the “Blacksmith’s Arms” a posting house where the mail was left for Watson to distribute.

Blacksmith's Arms is popular for its Sunday roasts as well as its Thai menu I love a bit of history and Rotherhithe’s Blacksmiths Arms has it in abundance.

That connection with the past is continued through the current landlord whose family have been lightermen on the Thames since the 19th century, with photos of those ancestors spruced up for a beano by a charabanc outside the legendary lighterage company, Braithwaite & Dean.

She then concentrated on the crispy garlic bits, leaving me to enjoy the chilli.

Nina, the fish-eating vegetarian, ordered the Rib-eye Steak that she set about like she hadn’t eaten for three days.

After a decent interval we shared the Special of the Day Dessert: Chocolate and Pecan Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream.
