Jesse Dunford Wood’s last stint prior to taking the reigns at Parlour was at Mall Tavern in Notting Hill.

My guess is that the excellent soda bread, served warm, is made in Jesse’s kitchen.

It seems that Jesse has a penchant for zest, fresh and natural flavours.

Jesse’s recipe was made famous during his time at Mall Tavern and it is without question, the closest real-life version of Desparate Dan’s favourite dish.

I did talk with Jesse after my meals and told him how much I enjoy Parlour.

He particularly enjoys taking clichéd dishes from the 1970s and modernising them, so on the menu you will see dishes such as “arctic roll” and his take on “chicken Kiev”.

At a recent meal, chicken liver pate with figs and honey (from nearby Cricklewood) had deep flavour and smooth texture, the figs providing the acidity to balance the richness of the liver and sweetness of the local honey.

This was a dish of which many Michelin-starred kitchens would be proud (15/20).

The flavour of the salmon was much superior to the commercial smoked salmon used in many high-end London restaurants (16/20).

Chicken Kyiv is a modern take on the 1970s cliché dish, here the chicken sphere packed with garlic butter, encased in fried breadcrumbs and served with coleslaw and a base of potato.

Also, should their verdict be the result of multiple visits rather than one quick meal (often, with new restaurants, when the paint's barely dry on the feature wall)?

This week, a rare instance of a new restaurant that feels old, which I visited twice before scoring.

The delicious array of pâtés and pickles – chicken liver, mushroom and chestnut, smoked fish, and ribbons of just-soused heritage carrots, gherkins – with some good soda bread and a pitcher of wine has my name on it for a repeat visit for a New Year's catch-up with my local girlfriends.

If I'd been the one to breathe new life into this tired old pub, I'd put thick velvet curtains round the door and at the windows – the dining-room can feel a little chilly away from the fire.

£60 for two, including drinks In Barnes's super-cute Little Chelsea, this charming pub offers simple, reliably good food, extending a warm welcome to adults, children and dogs alike; the outside tables are lovely Superb pub grub at this great local next to the cricket ground makes a relaxed destination for all the family This New England-style hotel, by Camber Beach, is a friendly destination, well suited to those with kids in tow; fresh fish is a feature, and they treat it well

Parlour, London – Restaurant Review Parlour, London Restaurant Review by Jen Grimble London is so densely populated by chain restaurants and mediocre eateries, that striking gold can be as tricky as reserving a table at the Chiltern Firehouse.

Like the menu, the interior of Parlour is eclectic, caught somewhere between country pub, elegant city restaurant and rustic Italian ristorante; picture coal-burning fires, marble-topped tables and leather seating.

For the carnivores, Parlour’s signature McTucky’s Popcorn Chicken Nuggets are crisp and succulent at £6 a portion.

Vegetarians need not feel ignored, because Parlour offers a selection of imaginative meat-free dishes, such as the Raw Vegetable ‘Ravioli’ with Goats’ Cheese, from £7 a portion.

“Indulgence” The dessert menu is perhaps Parlour’s most mouth-watering selection.

If you're feeling adventurous, why not try the Chef's Table, which seats seven and is a combination of art and food.

The chef will create a work of art on the table in front of you, entirely made out of food, which you can then eat.

Chef and owner Jesse Dunford Wood has turned the Parlour in Kensal Green into a  North West London gastronome’s paradise.

Guests to the Parlour are treated to something rather special with the Chef’s Table delivering a food experience that is unexpectedly fun and reminds that sharing food needn’t be dumbed down to a selection of platters.

Parlour’s menus evolve throughout the day so whether customers fancy some DIY toast or the (No Subs) Full Parlour Breakfast, there is something for them regardless of the time.

The pub offers a ‘Taste of Great Britain’ where it informs customers they will be taken on a British foodie adventure including cow pie, ‘back door’ smoked salmon, raw vegetable ravioli, blue cheese custard with marmiteless twiglets for the savoury options.

For dessert, diners can enjoy a British cheese board, toasted marshmallow wagon wheel, summer berry soufflé with Horlicks ice cream and naïve chocolate salted caramel rolos to take home.
