Paradise By Way Of Kensal Green | Restaurant Bar Frequented by a fashion-forward crowd including Kate Moss, Sophie Ellis-Bexter and Matthew Williamson, you’d expect the interior of Paradise by Way of Kensal Green to hold a few surprises.

If you’re looking to eat, Paradise offers Gastropub-style food with a designer twist.

And if you’re looking for fun as well as food, you can stop looking: Paradise has a consevatory roof terrace built for cocktailing; and an upstairs “music room” hosting big name DJs at weekends.

NOTE: Paradise by way of Kensal Green is now open.

The pub name actually comes from the last line in a GK Chesterton poem in “The Flying Inn” that alludes to the local cemetery: “For there is good news yet to hear and fine things to be seen; Before we go to Paradise by way of Kensal Green”.

The Paradise features in its main bar a large sculpture of an angel that looks as if it got lost on its way to the nearby cemetery.

We ordered a bottle of wine, and the same manager poured out two full glasses and walked off; I have limited expectations about wine service in pubs, but even in this situation it is normal to check with the customer whether the wine is OK.

The hazelnuts were decent, the artichoke reasonable, but the dry pastry did not contribute to a well-balanced salad, and by contrast with the quail it was very salty, even to my taste (barely 11/20).

The bird was competently cooked, the nduja (spreadable spicy salami) distinctly muted in its flavour, the fennel pleasant and the potato salad decent, though you would be hard-pressed to detect the saffron (12/20).

And an obvious risk walking to this place, along Harrow Road from Kensal Green Tube station, alongside the giant cemetery that gave G K Chesterton the punchline of his poem The Rolling English Road, about the joys of drunken wayfaring: "For there is good news yet to hear and fine things to be seen/ Before we go to Paradise by way of Kensal Green."

Half a dozen organic Poole Harbour oysters, big, salty rocks served raw on a bed of ice (£9.50), came three ways: Japanese, with soy, ginger and a bit of weed, delicious; with a punchy tomato sauce, Bloody Mary style, pretty good; and with Guinness-flavoured jelly, obviously meant to be a fun rendition of oysters with Black Velvet, not so nice, leaving a bitter aftertaste.

Smoked mackerel and Drambuie paté (£6.50), served in a Kilner jar with good toasted sourdough, was moist and flavoursome with a sweet tang to it, although a little seemed to go a long way.

Paradise by Way of Kensal Green, a slick, impressive operation, is the destination of choice for the area, dependably delivering a thoroughly good time.

Paradise by Way of Kensal Green might seem like a highfalutin’ name for a bar, but as the phrase comes from a GK Chesterton poem opposing the prohibition of alcohol, we’ll let the owners off.

Plus it's a good-looking spot, with chandeliers, velvet drapes, peeling paint and religious iconography lending things a gothic feel.

The Saturday night Paradise Sessions prove a bit of a draw (it's all about hip hop, house, disco and whatnot), as do the live music nights, cult film nights, cabaret and art shows.

And that's a sign, perhaps, of Paradise's culinary clout.

The newly refurbished, 100-cover dining looks like a suitably impressive setting for her to do her thing.
