Intriguingly, they were never in the restaurant trade, though I imagine the love for food courses through their veins.

Ida lays claim to be one of the few restaurants in London – and even Italy – which makes pasta in-house by the dying art of hand-rolling, as opposed to machined ways.

Grilled bread (also made in-house) is not for show of course, as it was the perfect compliment to the heavy sauce, soaking up all those wonderful flavours in the dough… oh, more bread please.

And finally, my main course, Tender pork fillet with marsala wine on a bed of steamed green beans.

For a short moment, I glimpsed a corner Italian restaurant in Middle Europe, and not Kensal Green, clientele seemed white collar, and having just knocked off work to enjoy a comforting meal.

Ida selects the freshest looking fish and decides based on this what we are going to cook that day.

Ida leaves the fish with the sellers to scale and gut while we look for the other ingredients we will need including tomatoes, carrots, spring onions, sweet potatoes, onions, aubergine, cassava, bitter tomatoes and butternut squash.

Also available is the new excursion 'Come Dine with Ida' - an evening of Gambian food and entertainment which costs £27 per person.

Not only is Ida a great cook, she's great company too and throughout the day she will no doubt share with you many interesting anecdotes about Gambian life.
