The Charles Lamb Pub

The Charles Lamb Pub

Welcome! - The CHARLES LAMB

Welcome to the Charles Lamb Pub & Kitchen A decidedly lovely corner pub in the back streets of Angel, the 170-year-old Charles Lamb is a dainty delight in cream and pastel green.

Named after the Georgian writer who lived locally, there are few finer pubs in which to curl up in the corner, on a quiet afternoon, and dip into a classic novel.

The Charles Lamb offers an ever-changing range of ales, but also boasts an admirable wine list.

Celebrate Bastille Day one day early at the Charles Lamb Pub ...

To celebrate Bastille Day (the French National Day), the good people at the Charles Lamb pub in Islington are throwing a Bastille Day street party one day early on 13 July.

The day’s activities include a pétanque competition (a form of boules), games, fresh seafood and live music.

For those looking for a festive treat besides the regular pub menu available, the Charles Lamb is also whipping up a three-course Bastille celebratory feast for £25 per person which includes a kir royale cocktail.

Plus it’s all for a good cause – all profits go to ‘Shelter From the Storm’ charity.

Brewhouse & Kitchen Islington, Angel & Islington

Having established themselves outside of London, their first branch has opened at Angel offering craft beer which is brewed on site.

Pete Hughes their head brewer is on site at the microbrewery at the back of the pub to show you how it’s done.

Their also have a hearty selection of pub food such as beer-can chicken which pairs well with their extensive beer selection on hand.

New Red Lion, Angel & Islington

The pub is the new theatre.

And culture vultures should not feel obliged to travel into the West End to spend a small fortune in order to be connected with their art.

Performance venues such as this one in Angel Islington are becoming more and more prevalent across London, and although you can secure a quiet pint and a chat in the early part of the evening, the blackened windows and the elevated stage should give you some indication that from 7.30pm onwards, it’s all eyes front.

Little sister to the famous theatre-above-a-pub, The Old Red Lion (also in Angel), this cosy pub-theatre has plenty of lounging sofas and cafe tables to rest a glass of wine on, with a small variety of pub grub available throughout the evening.

Established in 1839, the pub has been renamed in honour of Charles Lamb, the late 18th/early 19th century English essayist.

Best known for his collected essays entitled 'Essays of Elia', published in 1823, he also provided the name for the road on which the pub stands ("Elia" being the pen-name Lamb used as a contributor to The London Magazine).

As a Free House the Charles Lamb carry a good selection of Real Ales, Lagers and top shelf spirits.

Their expanding wine list is a good representation of their taste in New and Old World Wines.

They also offer an ever changing blackboard menu of traditional French and English dishes ~ mostly under £10.

Alan Yau does Thai food in Islington - we Test Drive Naamyaa Cafe ...

Review analysis
menu   food   location   busyness   staff   drinks   desserts

Naamyaa is a Thai cafe from Alan Yau, the man who launched such London mainstays as Hakkasan and Yauatcha.

Naamyaa is, according to Yau, aiming for an authentic Bangkok cafe theme with an eclectic menu that ranges from laksa to burgers and chips (Yau stresses that the latter would be available in Bangkok - hence their inclusion here).

The Islington branch is likely to be the first of a few Naamyaas to open around London (Yau is also behind the Busaba chain).

There are plenty of pubs in Islington, and even a decent bar in Jamie's Italian next door (there isn't a bar at Naamyaa itself).

Naamyaa Cafe is already attracting a big crowd, despite having only opened a few weeks before we went.

The Charles Lamb review: An understated Islington pub | London ...

This understated corner pub on Elia Street has been a favourite in N1 ever since it opened over 170 years ago.

Inside you’ll find an intriguing selection of guest ales and a varied selection of quality wines.

The green decor and homely feel makes the bar area a light and airy setting for a mid-day pint, and the food menu is pretty tempting after a few affordable glasses of Cotes Du Rhones too; the kitchen serves up a selection of well-executed pub favourites, but it’s the charcuterie sharing boards where it really excels.

The charming setting is a great place to enjoy it all, and makes The Charles Lamb one of the most-favoured pubs in Islington.
