Spotting the sign for GDK (with an off kilter ‘G’ haunting the background) while walking along Islington’s Upper Street elicits, in this order: a cartoon style neck whiplashing double-take; a public, barely disguised chuckle; a slow-burn recollection that Germany has a massive Turkish community (the largest in Western Europe); a thought that this is guaranteed to be shit, quickly followed by another that this may actually be genius; genuine disappointment that having emerged from lunch at Moro less than ten minutes before, there was no way I could tackle a kebab as dessert at 4pm – another day, another time, with a hunger.

The half-Turk in me has been quietly admiring the way Turkish cuisine has had a perky skip in its step for the last couple of years, encompassing good wodges of cookbooks and magazine supplements, TV cookery shows, and finally kicking in to the London restaurant openings, the most significant being Babaji Pide and Oklava, as well as the Turkish influence glowing bright at Chifafa Kebabs, Arabica Bar and Kitchen, Berber & Q, Le Bab ("posh" and "gourmet", no less), and the 'chicken kebab' at Michelin starred The Clove Club.

DURUM DONER SANDWICH (£5.99) – The Durum wrap is the one I order most in Turkish restaurants, albeit with the lavash bread wrapped around my favoured bit of meat coming off the mangal, the Adana kebab, a skewer of minced and spiced lamb which sums up the essence of what good ‘kebabery’ is all about.

Hodja Nasreddin in Stoke Newington had the honour of being the UK’s first kebab shop and restaurant in 1966 (closed many years ago), a favourite family spot I was first taken to at six months old (true story), and a short stagger away from GDK on Essex Road stood Sultan Ahmet (also now closed), another regular haunt of ours in the 80s: I find myself pining for both of these on the way home.

They survived for many years at a time when the last thing on their agenda was how to ‘package’ their Turkish offering; keeping the coals on the mangal burning and making sure the Iskender Kebab tomato sauce was spicy enough on the döner meat, the more pressing concerns.

German Doner Kebab — Croydon – Britpakgirl

Im not a fan of doner kebabs either but GDK looks good!

Really like the idea of lean veal as opposed to the greasy rubbish that goes into the average doner.

How about coming north of the river GDK?!

Well, for one, since this is a German oriented recipe, not only is the meat used not the traditional lamb typically served up by virtually every kebab shop across Britain, but veal, it is also sourced and transported directly from Germany.

For this reason, as affirmed in a recent interview we conducted with them, GDK hope that the use of such an exotic meat for a doner kebab will be their main selling point.

To this end then, they have four main dishes to offer: 1) the Doner Kebab Sandwich, 2) the Durum Doner Sandwich, 3) the Veggie Doner, and 4) the Lahmacun.

The Doner Kebab Sandwich is, in a word, special!

The Durum Doner Sandwich has all the same ingredients as the above except that the bread is far thinner and, therefore, easily wrappable.

A new branch of an international doner kebab chain has opened in Leicester.

German Doner Kebab started up in Berlin - where the doner kebab was invented - and has since brought the concept to UK cities including London and Birmingham.

While you might have some bad memories of dodgy doners consumed at the end of a night out, GDK isn't your standard kebab house.

Their classic doner kebab sandwich comes with prime cuts of chicken and beef, a choice of fresh salad, and GDK signature sauces - all wrapped up inside handmade bread.

We have exceeded our expectations and are very excited to bring German Doner Kebab to Leicester.

An Islington branch for the growing fast-food chain.

Joining its sister locations in Ealing, Fulham and Ilford is this Islington branch of GDK.

Eating kebabs outside of the context of alcohol feels downright weird (although the teetotallers that frequent the branches in places like Kuwait and Pakistan would probably disagree).

There were no details of calories on display anywhere, so I’m remaining optimistic at best about just how good GDK’s food is for you.

You’d never make a trip across town to eat here, but if you find yourself in Islington and after a quick, gratuitous meal, then pop in.
