JB's Soul Food and Jerk Chicken, Peckham - Food Stories - Helen ...

Review analysis
food

People find JB’s Soul Food and Jerk Chicken restaurant by “following the smoke trail” according to its owner, Jamaican-born Jennifer Hawes.

This smoke is essential for good jerk – the Jamaican method of cooking meats, vegetables or seafood over a fire pit (ooooh) or grill (bit more convenient).

“Some people do it in the oven, says Jennifer, and some people do it BBQ but it’s not BBQ, it’s jerk, so it has to be on the drum.”

Jennifer’s husband does all the seasoning and grilling of the meat and I know to not bother asking for even a hint at his recipe, because a jerk cook will never share.

The most important ingredients however, are no secret, “years ago” says Jennifer, “there wasn’t anything like all this chicken seasoning, all purpose seasoning…so in Jamaica, we used only natural seasonings: the spring onions, the onions, the thyme, the scotch bonnet chillies, the pimento seed (allspice berries), and garlic.”

Petitou remains a popular and pretty spot in the Bellenden area, famous for its no-nonsense breakfasts and large plates of fluffy scrambled eggs.

From one station to another — there's a branch of Blackbird Bakery to be found near Queen's Road Peckham with the usual coffee and cakes.

Tucked away off the main road is Yada's Kurdish restaurant, a charming, ramshackle space serving Kurdish delicacies, such as kubba (crispy, meat filled rice cases), kebabs and pickles.

Over the road is local Italian Artusi, with its emphasis on fresh pasta and quality ingredient sourcing — a modern contrast to the much loved but more homely style of Il Giardino down by the station — a charming, family-run spot which locals adore because it's a little like sitting in someone's living room.

The Hope is proving popular, packed with drinkers supping craft beers and hoovering toasted sandwiches, while The White Horse has been serving Peckham since the 1800s and is now run by the same people who run The Montpellier.

These guys are already famous in the local area for their award-winning bakery in East Dulwich and they now have a second branch next to Peckham Rye Station.

It’s a must for craft beer fans and Slow Richie’s are set up in the corner cooking their range of sandwiches, which are massive and creative with fillings like slow roast pork belly, chilli apple sauce and crackling, or meatballs with scotch bonnet sauce and melted Cheddar.

Peckham locals are incredibly lucky to have this Thai restaurant on their doorstep and it’s worth getting there early as the no-reservation system means you could wait a while at peak times.

You’ll pile into what is essentially a warehouse but feels like an exciting restaurant and be served large plates of perfect pasta, grilled meats and sharing salads, all of it very good indeed.

This bar/restaurant next to Peckham Rye Station is good for a pit stop at any time of day.
