Aside Peckham review - Best Restaurants In Peckham

We’re really loving exploring our new neighbourhood haunts in Peckham, and last week we discovered Aside — a stripped back but perfectly formed little spot a few street back off Queens Road.
That is, unless you lived South East, as the guys behind it run a few restaurants this way — Coal Rooms, Spike & Earl, Old Spike Roastery — all of which are still on the neighbourhood bucket list.
It’s seasonal small plates, the short menu feels exciting and autumnal.
We also share the red mullet with kale and orange, and the hake with potato and leeks — the latter being my favourite of the two.
Last of the savouries, the fried potato is a major underdog on the menu, don’t overlook it.

Tucked away in a side of Peckham you might not normally see, this stripped-back residential restaurant goes big on seasonal British flavours with fresh but comforting dishes – a complete contrast to the hearty soul food gracing the menu of Coal Rooms, its sister restaurant down the road in Peckham Rye station.
The menu moves seamlessly from smaller plates to mains.
Aside’s setup is less about individual, standalone dishes and more about building a meal, family dinnertime style, across multiple communal plates.

The lowdownA small space that can fit around 35 people, the restaurant is cosy and relaxed with whitewashed walls and simple wooden benches and stools, while the kitchen is open, meaning you can watch the chefs in action.

We opted for two of the smaller options – a creamy and delicious celeriac, chestnut and onion soup and a plate of Trompette mushrooms – followed by three much bigger plates, which could very almost pass as mains.

A social enterprise coffee roaster set up to train and employ homeless people across the UK, Old Spike Roastery has gone from strength-to-strength, succeeded by the opening of Spike + Earl all-day café and bar; plus Coal Rooms – a restaurant in the former ticket office of Peckham Rye station.
With space for 35, the room is bright and white-washed, completed with an original parquet floor, open kitchen, coffee-cocktail bar and beech wood tables fit with draws for cutlery, plates and napkins.
From the kitchen, the daily-changing menu champions local, seasonal produce, offering a short day menu and an evening menu comprised of small, sharing plates (of course it is).
Perfectly-cooked, the venison’s hues of purple were deftly contrasted by silky artichoke and tart plum segments, acting as a refreshing substitute to heavy sauces of berries or dark chocolate.
Comfortable and unpretentious, with an impressive repertoire of seasonally-focussed dishes and quietly assured cooking – Aside is a delightful neighbourhood restaurant, worth visiting even if you’re not already local.

What started as a small social enterprise coffee roasting house on the edge of leafy Peckham Rye Park is fast turning into a monopoly business in Peckham, as the team behind Old Spike Roastery opens its third venture in the popular south-east London neighbourhood.
After the coffee shop came Spike Earl, a sleek whitewashed all-day eatery on Peckham Road, and soon there will be a smokehouse inside of the Grade II listed Peckham Rye train station.
Championing local produce, cocktails and, of course, coffee, it neighbours the Assembly Point art gallery, and features original parquetry under its 35 covers.
A collaboration between co-owner Rob Dunne and David Ross, the Spartan interiors evoke a gallery aesthetic: ‘A cultural acknowledgment of London's history, development and association with such a broad dynamic global heritage,’ says Dunne.
On the menu dishes such as curried goat sit beside charred hispi cabbage, smoked eel and a 40-day aged steak from local butcher Flock and Herd, while cocktails are chic and inventive–the boys behind the bar have plans to move into liquor making, and to expand onto the residential street out front in 2018.
