My scoop on Masgouf: Asmak al-Basha's 'radiant Iraqi delight'

Masgouf, the national dish of Iraq, is a large, butterflied carp, roasted over the flames of fruit-tree wood before being plunged onto hot coals to cauterise and seal in the juices.

So it was that I found myself at Asmak al-Basha, a new Iraqi fish restaurant set up in the heart of London's Iraqi community in Cricklewood.

And you may rest easy, my patient readers, for the Masgouf at Asmak al-Basha was glorious.

Masgouf itself is of course important because of the beloved childhood memories for many Iraqis – but it also represents the long and glorious history of this proud culture – one of the oldest in the world.

The Iraqi state may have been destroyed by more than 25 years of American intervention, but as long as Masgouf is served like this, there will always be an Iraq to return to.

The very first time we visited, we had ordered an absolute feast with lamb shanks, a variety of dips and starters, and several meats.

Small but deliciously meaty lamb chops that have been chargrilled so perfectly that when you take a bite, the meat instantly pulls away from the bone, and bursts with juices and melted fat.

Heavily spiced minced lamb meat mixed in with coriander and chopped onions, covered in breadcrumbs/wheat, and deep fried to a delicious, crispy, meaty goodness.

The meat bourags were very good and consisted of minced lamb mixed in with various herbs and finely chopped onions.

Although most of the dishes are quite similar to other Middle Eastern restaurants and are in no way out of the ordinary, the lamb chops really are the best!

While we’ve mostly all had Middle Eastern food in London, the standard can often be variable.

If you’re looking for the very best in Middle Eastern food in London, then you need to take a trip to Knightsbridge and Masgouf Restaurant.

Their location on William Street, right off Knightsbridge proper, is more than a little exclusive, and their food too is suitably upmarket: let us talk you through a few of their most popular options.

While Masgouf is a Middle Eastern restaurant, their speciality is the cuisine of Iraq.

Pay them a visit at their location on William Street – take the Piccadilly line to Knightsbridge – for some Iraqi food in London that is well worth remembering.

Iraqi food has been around for some 10,000 years – well pre-dating Iraq, of course – and takes in historical influences from the ancient Mesopotamians, the Babylonians and the Assyrians, as well as contemporary trends that pass over from Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Turkey.

If you’re looking for Iraqi restaurants in London, then the name of the game is Masgouf Restaurant, and their location on Connaught Street in Paddington is perfect for a night out tasting the best that the region has to offer.

Masgouf itself is the national dish of Iraq, and it is from this speciality that the restaurant derives its name.

Masgouf is fish, split, seasoned and grilled over charcoal, and if you take the journey to Marble Arch tube and Masgouf Restaurant, then you’ll be able to try some of the best in London.

We’d go on all day, but instead you’d be much better served by wandering over to Masgouf Restaurant yourself.
