Bombay Palace | Marble Arch London

Bombay Palace first flung open its doors to Connaught Street in 1981 and is one of eight branches around the world, including outposts in Beverley Hills and Hyderabad.

Bombay Palace is well patronised by the local community, who come here for Indian cooking with a level of care and attention above the high street norm.

We start with a selection of traditional street snacks including golgappa puri, small round crispy shells to be filled with flavoured water and popped whole into the mouth – always a dicey experience for fear of spluttering contents onto the tablecloth – but no less delicious for it.

Seekh kebabs are a hit, having enough fat to remain moist, and strength of flavour to stand up to spice.

The surprise win however is the chicken, beautifully marinated in yoghurt, ginger and citrus, it has been sliced on top to encourage even cooking, avoiding the dryness which often plagues this preparation.

It’s more about bbq’d food flavoured with generous doses of herbs, tandoori dishes and sometimes creamy marinades.

He then created the dishes at the Bombay Palace in Kuala Lumpur for some eight years.

These came with Tarka Dal, a lentil dish tempered with cumin, chopped onion, ginger and garlic and Paak Paner – cottage cheese cooked with creamed spinach, cumin seeds and garlic.

I went for this because I am a chicken fan and this was a dish of chicken morsels in white butter, cream and tomato gravy.

It is part of an international chain of eight branches.

Channa masala had chickpeas that had good texture and pleasant spicing (12/20) though an aloo gobi was less good, the vegetables having an odd, powdery texture in places (9/20).

When we arrived we gave our names for the reservation but the meet-and-greet person looked baffled; there were few other diners so it was not an issue.

It was a quiet Sunday evening with just a few other diners, but even the overly loud muzak playing could not distract from two of the managers having a blazing row with one another in the middle of the dining room (they seemed to patch things up later).

When we finished our main courses the dishes sat there uncleared, while two distinctly under-employed waitresses chatted to each other a few yards away.

Begin your meal with some Indian street food favourites like the gol guppe (hollow crisp poori filled with tangy, spicy chutneys), before moving on to a time-tested favourite like the Goan fish curry, nalli gosht (succulent lamb shanks simmered with browned onions, black cardamom and spices) or the veggie-friendly paneer mutter.

A favourite among London’s spice seekers when looking for somewhere special to dine, spaces at Bombay Palace are limited.
