Four Hundred Rabbits, Nunhead: review | Below The River

Photo: PR The good news for residents of this SE15 neighbourhood is that hip Crystal Palace pizza gaff Four Hundred Rabbits has just opened a second outlet, joining Nunhead Green’s ever-smartening parade of shops.

Photo: PR Our pizzas were pretty tasty, with a decent price point (around £7-£9), the bases yielding satisfying texture and chew.

Although our side salad, with its radishes and toasted seeds, was more than decent, we reckon they should do starter sizes of their salad mains, too: a request for a beetroot special was swiftly refused.

It’s all about celebrating “fermentation and two of the best things it has given us, pizza and beer”.

This is box title We paid £37 inc service for a 500ml of house red, two pizzas and a side salad.

After the successes of their flagship restaurant in Crystal Palace, it’s no surprise to hear of news of a second Four Hundred Rabbits opening.

This time bringing their artisan pizzas and rotating list of beers to Nunhead, you’ll be able to check out their second venture from mid-August time.

Based on Evelina Road, Four Hundred Rabbits is dedicated to serving up beautiful pizzas that wouldn’t look out of place on the streets of Napoli.

Away from the pizza and there’s still plenty going on, with interiors designed by the same team that won a glut of awards working on their Crystal Palace site and a regularly rotating selection of 12 beers from brewers throughout the UK and Europe.

Four Hundred Rabbits also promises a fine cup of coffee, and six different varieties of gelato for guests with a sweet tooth.

Having opened a year ago, this friendly neighbourhood pizza restaurant was the second of its kind in South London - the first being their Crystal Palace location.

Clearly proud of its South London location, beers from fellow sub-Thames producers the Gypsy Hill Brewery feature prominently on its drinks list, including the Moxie Berry Sour (£4.50), a tart, jammy ale that tastes like fermented Ribena.

Also available is the monthly South London Producer Collaboration pizza.

I plumped for a white pizza, with courgette, feta and pine nut pesto (£8.50) - one of their most popular, despite its controversial no-tomato status.

All sour cream-based (sorry, vegans), there are three house dips that come in Chipotle chilli, confit garlic and cashel blue and chive (£1.50 each), perfect for dipping those chewy crusts into.

On my wanderings around Crystal Palace, not miles away from my house, I spotted a while ago Four Hundred Rabbits, a sourdough pizza place.

The pizza was topped with a compote/cream of rhubarb, capped off with a smoky chipotle and sharp goat’s cheese.

Four Hundred Rabbits is a lovely south London local sourdough pizza place.

Their toppings with San Marzano DOP tomatoes, fresh Fior Di Latte mozzarella, fresh seasonal local British ingredients, and some very creative recipes are irresistible – a must try!
