Tonkotsu Notting Hill | MY HUNGRY VALENTINE

food

When ramen took over London in 2012, Emma Reynolds and Ken Yamada quickly stood out with their deep, rich broth cooked for 18 hours and their bouncy fresh noodles made daily here.

Since then, their little Soho joint has spread all over the city (Bankside, East, Mare Street...).

In Notting Hill, the slurping of their oh-so comforting recipes happens at the counter or the communal tables.

It includes the eponymous porky Kyushu specialty or the veggie curry pumpkin in a konbu-shitakes broth.

I am a big sushi fan, but this place was rubbish.

When it did arrive they didn't bring mine at the same time as my boyfriend's, and of the three sushi dishes i ordered, only two arrived - though they put all three on the bill.

My boyfriend's seafood soup was filled with crabsticks and wasn't great.

My sushi was dry, and not particularly cheap considering.

A new Tonkotsu is always good news and this latest sees them heading a little more west than usual, coming to Notting Hill, right around the corner from the Electric Cinema.

This Tonkotsu will also be a small departure from the rest, as they're aiming for a counter-style ramen bar of the kind you'll find in Tokyo.

Inside they'll have some old favourite ramen dishes as well as the Tonkotsu classics - homemade gyoza and chicken karaage - plus some new dishes that will be unique to the Notting Hill Tonkotsu.

And you'll be able to try the new Tonkotsu beer that they've just started brewing and is available in all their restaurants.

Tonkotsu Notting Hill opens at 7 Blenheim Crescent, W11 2EE on February 5 - and will have a soft launch with 50% off food from 5-6 Feb.

A tiny branch of Tonkotsu offering its famous ramen off Portobello Road.

It's branch number six for Tonkotsu, and this time, it’s Notting Hill’s turn to discover why ramen lovers can’t get enough of this mini chain.

Tonkotsu Notting Hill is super tiny – an authentic nod to traditional Japanese izakayas, which to be fair, isn’t so bad if you’re dining for two or rolling solo.

Tonkotsu trades on an unusually hearty style of ramen, where thin, firm noodles, a perfect soft-boiled egg and salty chunks of pork belly are steeped in a pearly pork broth so indulgent, it feels like it should be a special treat (which it is).

Still, Tonkotsu Notting Hill has more hits than misses, making it a very likeable neighbourhood spot to get your next noodle fix.
