The Fat Walrus

The Fat Walrus

The Fat Walrus opened its doors on January 20th, 2016 and is quickly becoming a firm favourite with the locals of New Cross, Brockley and Telegraph Hill.

The interior of the pub was designed and built entirely by the front of house team who - if you can be bothered to listen - will happily brag about the hard labour they put in to get the pub to it's current state.

The mood lighting, exposed brickwork and comfy booths, along with the friendly atmosphere make the pub feel like it's been your local for years.

Fat Walrus: just opened in New Cross So why the fat walrus?

Ben (our assistant manager) half jokingly suggested naming it after The Fat Walrus, and I immediately fell in love with it.

All over: the Florence in Herne Hill, the Merchant in Clapham and, most recently, New Cross House: when I left, all the staff also handed in their notice and twelve of us are now here, including three chefs.

Simple interior: Fat Walrus.

Having run New Cross House for the last four years, I reckon I have a bit of a head start.

BEER GARDENS - London On The Inside

The Duke of Edinburgh has one of the biggest beer gardens in South London and it comes with a huge outdoor bar and BBQ pit.

Famed for their roasts and beer garden that’s big enough to seat 200 people, this is the perfect place to spend a Sunday Afternoon.

Just down the road from Highbury & Islington station, The Alwyne Castle has a mega beer garden out front, with plenty of tables and a few covered huts for bigger groups.

There may not be a whole lot of greenery but there’s certainly lots of space, and with classic pub grub and a strong selection of ales, beers and gins, it makes a great pit-stop after a spin round the galleries.

Covered and heated in winter, a sun trap in summer, the garden’s great year-round, and with Plonk crazy golf, BBQs and outdoor bars, there’s always something going on, and that’s before you get to their on-site Brew Lab and bangin’ roasts.

The food menu features American style barbecue dishes, such as flame grilled burgers – of the beef, chicken and veggie varieties – all of which are served with fries.

An eight-ounce steak with spicy harissa and fries is also available, as well as grilled king prawns with paella for those fond of seafood.

Visitors with a sweet tooth can tuck into ice cream or a variety of messes, which involve whipped cream and ice cream muddled together with chunks of jam doughnut, banana and toffee or brownies, Oreos and Maltesers.
