Wild Honey Restaurant

Just off Regent and Oxford Street, on St George Street in Mayfair, offers seasonal and creative food at affordable prices.

Wild Honey - A contemporary Mayfair timeless classic…

After two years, he moved to London, to join Rhodes at The Greenhouse - where he rose from chef de partie to sous chef over two years.

This was followed by a significant shift to The Four Seasons Hotel in London for nearly three years, where Bruno Loubet ran the kitchen and earned a Michelin star.

When Loubet launched Bistro Bruno, Anthony moved with him to Soho - and the two continued to work together to open a second site, L’Odéon, in Regent Street, where Anthony assumed his first head chef position and remained for three years.

Then, in 1999, he was appointed chef/director of Putney Bridge in Putney, southwest London, and the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star within a year of opening, in January 2000.

In 2007, Anthony and Will launched Wild Honey in Mayfair, London, and the restaurant also won a Michelin star within a year of opening.

I’m not sure which came first – I think the dynamic duo of Anthony Demetre and Will Smith debuted with arbutus and then following the runaway success of that great little soho eatery, they’ve gone ahead to open their second culinary delight in wild honey.

Both arbutus and wild honey are part of this new up and coming batch of ‘budget fine dining’ spots.

Chef Demetre almost seems to challenge himself to keep the menu exciting by crafting superior dishes out of fresh seasonal produce which is good enough to compete with the big boys except that the prices are relatively modest in comparison.

I’ll take this opportunity to speak of the similarities between the wild honey menu and the arbutus menu.

Don’t get me wrong, before my visit to honey, I did love arbutus ( you must try the pigs head ) but being that wild honey menu is so close to arbutus’, it was surprising that the cooking here is so much better.

Could this Mayfair newcomer possibly equal the remarkable value which has been all but universally acclaimed at Arbutus, its Soho parent?

As we entered the paneled premises formerly known as the Drones Club, the Arbutus team - Anthony Demetre and Will Smith - were both in attendance, But that's as far as similarity of physical appearance went: whereas their Soho premises are tightly-packed and clattery, Wild Honey is serene and well-spaced.

Arbutus is famously a value proposition, and a £15.50 3-course set lunch menu is also on offer here in Mayfair.

It was in fact the better of our two meals - with a chunky bavette (steak) as its highlight, it was undoubtedly a very good deal.

An à la carte selection was variable.

Martin Brudnizki Design Studio was asked by Will Smith and Anthony Demetre to renovate their Wild Honey restaurant in the heart of Mayfair.

The restaurant now showcases a rosa aurora marble topped bar in the centre of the space and tables that look out over Saint George Street.

Against the original timber panelling and decorative mouldings Martin Brudnizki Design Studio have introduced red banquettes, yellow mohair bar stools and 50’s inspired burnt orange dining chairs to create a space synonymous with Wild Honey’s contemporary take on a Mayfair classic.

The menu is rather more appealing than Arbutus, with slightly less spartan ingredients e.g. halibut and sea bass rather than pollack, though there is corned beef - corned beef?

A salad of smoked eel has tasty eel, a little beetroot and some horseradish cream with well-controlled horseradish flavour, along with some decent leaves (14/20).

Sea bass was cooked without its skin, an odd decision since this not only results in a loss of flavour and moisture but ends up with a brown, mushy appearance without the attractive silver skin (this served with brown mushrooms).

The sea bass was again farmed and so rather tasteless but cooked nicely, served with decent girolles and slightly overcooked borlotti beans, but also a couple of braised leeks, which didn't give any real interest to an already rather tasteless dish (14/20 if I am kind).

It is nearly two years since I last spotted an English waiter in a London restaurant, a certain Matthew Jolleys at the Ledbury, and I expect there to be a new trend of people with Burberrys wandering around London restaurants noting the comings and goings of such rare creatures.

In July 2007 the team behind Arbutus, introduced their second restaurant Wild Honey in Mayfair.

The restaurant offers cosy and private booths and banquette seating and a stunning onyx bar top.

The wine list is concise but varied, offering good value for money.

With about 25 reds, 25 whites, rosés and dessert wines the wine list covers all of the major wine growing regions of the world.

A unique feature of the list is that all the wines are available by a third of a bottle carafe (250ml).

This allows diners the opportunity to sample several wines through the meal, and makes it easier to explore the list and to be tempted to try something new.
