Located at the end of Charlotte Street, in a four-storey Georgian townhouse, is Bam-Bou, a hub of South Asian cuisine with dishes inspired by the likes of China, Thailand and Vietnam.

With dishes in a variety of sizes, Bam-Bou makes an ideal destination for diners who are looking for either a quick intro date or a full indulgent evening.

There are plenty of options to choose from in the main dishes section – whether you like dumplings, curry or noodles, the essence of South Asian food is at the forefront here.

The Bam-Bou steamed sea bass, served with green papaya, was exquisite; equally, the seared scallops served with sweet pork was a signature dish to be highly commended.

Whether it’s a first, second or 15th date you’re on, Bam-Bou provides the setting for an intimate venue where you can focus the conversation around the food and ambience.

The Red Bar at Grosvenor House has played host to film stars, foreign dignitaries, football players and musicians during its illustrious 78 year history.

The Red Bar is a classic hotel bar in the best sense of the word.

Its unpretentious menu features popular wines and beers alongside classic cocktails in addition to the signature “Red Viking”, created by veteran barman, Joe Creighton, who has worked in the Red Bar for some 40 years.

Regular guests will recognise the iconic scarlet interior, but the restored Red Bar has a lustrous, almost retro new look.

So popular were the caricatures that adorned the walls in the old design, guests have requested that a small number of the most striking be integrated into the new style bar as a testimony to their popularity.

An hour later I was in the Grosvenor's smart French restaurant - uniformed waiters, chandeliers, antique furniture imported from across the Channel, large picture windows looking onto Hyde Park - where sea bream was on the menu at £14.50, and roast partridge with savoy cabbage, roast parsnips, chicken liver and foie gras crouton with Madeira jus, came in at just £16.50.

The hotel opened in 1929 on the site of Gloucester House, home to George III's brother and later the Grosvenor family, and became a favourite of London's smart set.

Since there's also a Marriott Grosvenor Square round the corner, and a Marriott Park Lane just up the road, this seems guaranteed to cause confusion, but American guests will probably understand that "JW" is the top-level, five-star sub-brand of the Marriott empire.

There's a smart drawing room, the Park Room, offering 17 types of tea and a "library" of vintage champagnes, where tea and crumpets costs £9.50 (compared with £37 for tea at the Ritz).

When I last looked at the hotel's website, you could get a double room for next Saturday, for example, from £205.
