REVIEW: The American Bar, The Stafford London, St James's Place ...

These old timers evoke sophistication, have so much history and so effortlessly impress – you won’t find anything in London like The Stafford and more importantly, The American Bar.

One thing that did surprise me about The American Bar was not the food, but how it was served – on a lap tray.

The menu here is extensive for a bar and we wanted just about everything on it, from American classics, British favourites, pasta and whole offering from the josper grill from which our steak was cooked in.

A delicious 10oz grilled 28 day New York strip loin and 8oz fillet steak, both cooked perfectly with a lovely smokiness running through it.

With great food, fantastic cocktails and even better service there really isn’t anything to not like about this place – although lap eating may not be for everyone.

It was the first in the Savoy group of hotels and restaurants owned by Carte's family for over a century.

The Savoy was the first luxury hotel in Britain, introducing electric lights throughout the building, electric lifts, bathrooms in most of the lavishly furnished rooms, constant hot and cold running water and many other innovations.

The next year, Carte engaged M. Joseph, proprietor of the Marivaux Restaurant in Paris, as his next maître d'hôtel[17] and in 1900, hired George Reeves-Smith as the next managing director of the Savoy hotel group.

[18] After Richard D'Oyly Carte died in 1901, his son Rupert D'Oyly Carte became chairman of the Savoy hotel group in 1903 and supervised the expansion of the hotel and the modernisation of the other hotels in the group's ownership, such as Claridge's.

[22] When the hotel was expanded, Rupert D'Oyly Carte decided to develop a luxurious, handcrafted bed unique to the Savoy and his other hotels.

The American Bar at the Savoy is one of many American Bars around the world.

Lists like these are, of course, impossible: bars do different things for different people at different times.

So the American Bar is expensive, but there are many other places which are a rip off.

The Pickering Place is made for a date night, compromising of two (full size) drinks: the ‘elegant’ - Gin, Cocci rosa, campari, lemon juice, egg white, saffron syrup and champagne, and the ‘bold’, Jack Daniels single barrel, Fernet Branca Menta, byrrh, sugar syrup and coffee.

I wouldn’t say it’s the best bar in the Savoy – I prefer the cosier Beaufort, where the drinks are almost as good, and the grandness of the setting makes up for any less prestigious history – but the American is a must.

The American Bar | Classic Cocktail Bar in Mayfair, London

Jimmy's Bar belongs to the great tradition of American Bars that became legendary in London and Paris from the 1920s on.

The kind of place where Ernest Hemingway or F Scott Fitzgerald would have felt at home, its sober walnut interior subverted by an element of fun, in the form of hundreds of photographs of British and American characters who frequented Mayfair during the period.

The American Bar specialises in bourbons, American whiskies and classic cocktails, which are strictly shaken or stirred: nothing new-fangled here.

"The most handsome, most civilised bar to have opened in London in the past year feels as though it's been here forever."
