Is Trader Vic's the worst restaurant in the world? | City A.M.

Cost for two with booze (but no dessert): £126.50 OK, let’s get this out of the way: Trader Vic’s is awful.

In fact, clearing tables is not high on the priority list at Trader Vic’s: crockery and leftovers lay strewn across the restaurant like elephant graveyards of meals long deceased.

The “volcano shrimp” was every bit as bad as it sounds: supermarket-grade prawns that have been water-boarded in sweet chilli sauce – the kind of thing you might make yourself if you were drunk.

Trader Vic’s is an anti-restaurant – it’s a lacklustre tourist attraction for people who hate food, and themselves; somewhere you might think was fun, if you’ve never actually been out for a meal before.

To round it off, as if trained to deliver the pièce de résistance, a mouse emerged from under a table to complete a victory lap of the restaurant.

Running for over 50-years, this tropical themed tiki bar and restaurant has been serving thirsty Londoners the original Mai Tai and whipping up indulgent Polynesian cuisine since 1963.

An interior décor of bamboo shoots, carved wooden tiki totems and tropical murals might sound passé, but stepping foot in Trader Vic’s is anything but.

Trader Vic’s is renowned for serving up the original Mai Tai, after the drink was created in their Californian branch in 1944.

This salad dish is made with Ahí Tuna fresher than any fish I have tasted in London, lightly dressed in chili soy sauce and sesame, combined in a tartare style shape with soft, ripe avocados and serves with freshly warmed, crunchy Taro chips (which tasted a little like poppadoms fyi).

I understand why this bar is a London institution, because even if it can be accused of being a little kitsch, everyone needs a little tropical paradise now and again, even if it is make believe.

Located just off Park Lane, Trader Vic’s has been offering Polynesian cuisine, quirky cocktails and great tropical vibes to Londoners since 1963.

Of course, you’d be forgiven if your first thoughts were to dismiss this place as another gimmicky tropical-themed restaurant in London, but Trader Vic’s manages to exude authenticity, from the shells and corals that adorn the walls to the wood-panelled interior design, and this helps to reinforce its history and make it stand out from its competitors.

Trader Vic’s makes no secret of having over 200 signature cocktails to its name, but what stood out the most on the menu was the Original Mai Tai, which Trader Vic himself invented in 1944.

For dessert we would definitely recommend the coconut Trader Vic’s Polynesian Snowball, or if you are feeling a little less adventurous, perhaps the warm apple pie.

With its quirky style and authenticity, I would strongly recommend Trader Vic’s to anyone looking for a date location in London filled with history, good food and a great atmosphere.

Our little tiki tour of Germany started in Nuremberg with Kon Tiki and Die Blume von Hawaii, and concluded a little farther south into Bavaria with Trader Vic’s Munich.

Trader Vic’s London, which opened in 1963, is the oldest operating branch, followed by Trader Vic’s Munich, which made its debut in 1971.

This is the only Trader Vic’s location left in Germany (or continental Europe, for that matter), since the closures of Trader Vic’s Berlin (2003-2009) and Trader Vic’s Hamburg (1990-2013).

A glassed-in room houses the large wood-fired Chinese ovens, a signature of Trader Vic’s restaurants.

If you’re traveling through Germany, be sure to take a momentary detour from the beer gardens and stop in for a Mai Tai at Trader Vic’s Munich.

A real slice of exotic right in the heart of Park Lane, this is the only place in London you should definitely stop for a Mai Tai.

Share a rum keg between four friends or taste the original Mai Tai, created in Trader's Vic in 1944.

The name 'Mai Tai Roa Ae' means 'Out of this world' - so escape the city for a while with a sip of this fantastic libation while relaxing in the comfy seating and admiring the Tiki carvings.

The cocktail menu is enormous and deserves a full evening of careful choices, luckily the bartenders are very knowledgeable and happy to make any hideaway is a haven for tailored tipples, exotic atmospheres and live music.
