A quick browse around the hotels and its communal rooms, we climbed the creaky staircase on the first floor where the bedrooms and all things historic await.

After a few laps in the swimming pool, a good hour in the Jacuzzi was in order and I really didn’t want to leave – until it was time for my spa treatment… In preparation for my spa treatment, a quick relaxation session in the spa garden was exactly what I needed.

The Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa is such an charming place to spend a night to simply get away from it all and immense yourself in history.

With good food, huge rooms and a terrace to waste away the afternoon – there is more than one reason to visit this 15th century hotel.

The brainchild of two master publicans and the reigning monarchs of vegan street food, Club Mexicana, it’s the first London pub where everything – from the food and drink down to the fixtures and fittings – has been sourced from sustainable, non-animal sources.

Spruced up with midnight blue and copper accents, a hefty central bar and cosy wall seating, here’s how it breaks down… THE FOOD With Club Mexicana helming the kitchen, you can expect all their Mexican-via-Californian street food classics, like the deep fried cheeze with Valentina hot sauce; smoky jackfruit tacos and Californian-styled battered to-fish and chips served in a burrito.

And since it’s all vegan, you can feel almost entirely guilt-free finishing off with a ‘Death by Taco’, an upsettingly delicious combination of deep fried taco, dipped in chocolate and nuts, stuffed with ice cream and salted caramel sauce.

So the drinks served here are all carefully chosen from vegan producers; including a rotating range of 16 beers on tap, a concise list of organic wines, and a swathe of cocktails.

In search of a range of opinions, our reviewer brought his vegan girlfriend and devoutly carnivorous parents to this hot new vegan pub and Mexican kitchen “You realise the review’s at 3, not at 2, right?”

My father is over an hour early to arrive at Homerton’s 100 per cent vegan The Spread Eagle pub and kitchen, and I’m still getting dressed.

The Spread Eagle, in the former home of The Jackdaw And Star on Homerton High Street, is the brainchild of Club Mexicana head Meriel Armitage.

We look over the pared-down Mexicana menu, and my girlfriend (the only vegan at the table) walks my parents through the various meat substitutes featured – oyster mushrooms become ‘scallops’, jackfruit is discussed, and an explanation of (Hackney favourite) seitan is proffered.

Said cheese (or ‘cheeze’ as The Spread Eagle calls it) comes deep-fried with Valentina hot sauce on the ‘beer-pairing’ section of snacky sides.
