One of two Roka restaurants to open in London in 2014, Roka Mayfair opened on North Audley Street on 17th February and Roka Aldwych opened in October 2014.

Ten years after Rainer Becker set up the original Roka and Shochu Lounge on Charlotte Street in 2004, Roka Mayfair follows the successful formula of the original restaurant with the charcoal robata grill at the heart of the contemporary Japanese restaurant.

Excellent ingredients and expertly crafted sushi and sashimi compliment the food from the robata grill and dishes like rice hot pot with lobster from a menu overseen by the group's executive chef, Hamish Brown.

Relaxed yet elegant dining is the feel of the Mayfair restaurant where glimpses of crimson complement the contemporary design and a plush upholstered wall features hand-painted Japanese prints.

Rainer Becker and Arjun Waney, who first appeared on the London restaurant scene in 2002 with Zuma, will have four Roka branches in London by the end of 2014, with the two new openings following hot on the heels of their 2013 launch of Oblix on the 32nd floor of The Shard.

For a special occasion this evening, K and I headed to Roka for some seriously special Japanese robata (charcoal grilled) food.

We chose this branch for its menu (see Roka Mayfair menu) which includes black cod, a favourite of mine.

We took their recommendation for the fried aubergine salad, and were glad we did.

The kitchen is open plan in the centre of the restaurant, so you can see the food being cooked on the robata grills.

Roka London Restaurant Review With Pictures

Launched by Executive Chef and Zuma owner Rainer Becker, the trendy eatery stands by his ethos of serving 'authentic not traditional' cuisine, which now encompasses the four restaurants in London, including Roka Mayfair on North Audley Street, our home for the evening.

It's not ostentatious from the outside, with a subtle terrace sitting below black signage, however, from the moment you enter the doors, you can tell that the restaurant theme is Japanese cuisine, with flaming robata grills sizzling away in the open kitchen, a sea of waiters serving delicacies from Black Cod to Tuna Tartare and a string of specialised sushi chefs slicing sashimi for all to see.

The slick interiors reflect the contemporary and innovative dishes through a sea of wooden tables, walls, chairs and ceiling with spotlights highlighting the food below.

Split into bite-size sections, the menu covers snacks and warm bites, salads, robata dishes, Roka dishes, sashimi and maki rolls.

Failing to have any room left, we gave the hot pots a miss, but the rice hot pot with japanese mushrooms on the next door table looked delicious - something to save for next time.

This relaxed yet elegant restaurant in plush Mayfair serves contemporary Japanese Robatayaki cuisine.

At the heart of the restaurant is the robata grill, which is an integral design element of the room.
