For those of you who are not familiar with the JW, you can take your visual cues from a New York restaurant whose interior leans towards that of a gentlemen’s club (the sort with butlers and cognac, not chrome poles and nipples) and as such it is adorned with dark wood panelling, American oak perhaps; the ‘Bourbon bar’ sits nicely in one corner and a selection of meat to rival anything Desperate Dan might have had an eye on stands by ready to impress.

The Fried Calamari and JW Maryland Style lump crab cakes, both served with old bay tartar sauce, were great, but in retrospect not the lightest of dishes to kick off the evening, and when you add in delicious freshly baked bread roles the words school, boy and error spring to mind.

Chi Chi, who had the epic task of keeping us happy for the evening, was on hand to explain the way it worked, and after some sage advice, a little guidance and a beaming smile we chose the Porterhouse and JW ‘Tomahawk’, a tiny 32 oz Aberdeen Angus Rib Eye, served on-the-bone.

I’m used to cheese cake arriving in one of two ways: a slice from a large cake sized dessert, or, a smaller, round, individual pudding.

On the way home, Lady Stirling put together her top five tips for dining at the JW:

REVIEW: JW Steakhouse, London- Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair

Located in the Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair, they describe their steak proudly: Our USDA (United States Department Agriculture) beef is from Creekstone in the USA.

As I read through the menu lovingly, trying to decide between tuna tartare, steak tartare or fresh calamari to start, Ben was quite plain with his assessment: “The calamari is the best I’ve ever tried” and he could have been more correct.

I was told, rather categorically, to order the 1000g Tomahawk, their signature steak, and the lobster mac ’n’ cheese, with a glass of Malbec to accompany this monstrous meat.

Following the meal we headed to the bourbon bar to talk to the passionate bourbon maestro and bar manager Ubhay Ubaydullayev, who had sent over a superb Old Fashioned during dinner by way of saying introducing himself.

Ubhay noticed my enjoyment of the warmed drink and offered mulled bourbon which will be a feature on the Dillon Christmas menu in 2015 – actually it was so good I don’t think we’ll be waiting until next Christmas!

Featuring the finest cuts of American USDA beef and select, hand-cut selections of Aberdeen Angus, JW Steakhouse is quite simply an expert in steak.

JW Steakhouse’s signature steak is the dramatic 32 ounce, on-the-bone rib eye aptly named ‘The Tomahawk.’

All dishes are perfectly matched with a sumptuous wine list A mouth-watering dessert selection completes the menu, with JW Steakhouse’s signature cheesecake the stand out dish.

“With the Park Room recognised as one of the top afternoon teas in London and Corrigan’s garnering ongoing acclaim, JW Steakhouse provides guests and Londoners with an authentic, approachable and expertly prepared steakhouse fare.”

JW Steakhouse have an impressive specials board with everything from Wagu beef to honey glazed carrots making an appearance not to mention the larger cuts of meat and Porterhouse combinations.

JW Steakhouse opened in 2010 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair's Park Lane, and is one of the few restaurants of its kind in London featuring grain-fed American USDA certified beef from Creekstone, as well as grass-fed Aberdeen Angus from Macken Brothers of Chiswick.

We chose the American USDA Porterhouse Steak (£59 for 800g – a serving for 2) that came with a very well-made Béarnaise sauce.

The magnificent lobster mac ‘n cheese which we had at our last meal at JW Steakhouse (and probably one of the reasons for our return visit) was unfortunately not available on the night.

Verdict: Top notch steaks, a fantastic wine selection and excellent service make JWS one of the best steakhouses in London.

A perfect meal for me here would be their USDA Porterhouse steak, the lobster mac 'n cheese, followed by the signature cheesecake - all unmissable.
