Blades at Hush harks back to a bygone era, when Mayfair was the place to go for any discerning Londonista.

The name is a nod to the private members club of James Bonds M, and reflects our ethos that Hush is like a private members club without the membership.

Hush has a natural 60s connection; the windows look in to Jimi Hendrix’s apartment and a selection of 60s photography of Sir Roger Moore and other film stars from Hush co-founder Geoffrey Moore’s personal collection line the walls.

Together with Hush’s natural affiliation with Bond, Blades is an opportunity to rediscover the glamour of the era.

Blades at Hush: Restaurant Review

Lancashire Court gets a Bond-inspired makeover with its new steak, lobster and whisky restaurant Blades at Hush in Mayfair Hush – dubbed the ‘private member’s club you don’t have to be a member of’ by founder Jamie Barber – is tucked away on the cobbles of Lancashire Court.

Inspired by Ian Fleming’s fictional members’ club in the James Bond novels (Roger Moore’s son Geoffrey is the co-founder), the revamped silver room serves primarily steak, lobster and whisky.

My guest opted for The Bowler, which starred Blades’s own blended Scotch while I – being far from a whisky connoisseur – tried the sweet and frothy Mr Kipling’s.

My fillet steak was a generous chunk of juicy Angus beef, deeming the lobster a gluttonous but tasty extra.

While my companion opted for the USDA fillet steak that was a tad overdone, the accompanying whisky glaze made up for this slight – the deep, glossy sauce had a moreish and mouth-watering umami flavour.

Classics Revisited: Hush

When was the last time I ate at Hush, I wondered as I read the press release announcing the restaurant’s 18th anniversary.

With a sick prickle of horror I realised it was my 23rd birthday, shortly after Hush opened in 1999 – a lifespan long enough to have raised a child and packed them off to university.

As it is, I’ve been a very absent presence in the restaurant’s life.

If its present fine fettle is anything to go by, Hush should last at least another 18 years.

Afternoon Tea at Hush - Mayfair

Escape the West End hoards and head to the tranquillity of Hush Mayfair's cobbled courtyard for Gin & Jam Tea.

In the grand tradition of Afternoon Tea, Hush's Gin & Jam Tea features classic teatime treats, including elegant finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and jam, Raspberry Ripple Lollipops and Passion Fruit Jaffa Cake, served alongside a selection of artisan loose leaf teas by H. R. Higgins of Mayfair.

Served in the beautiful surroundings of the Blades room, the Tea is a quintessentially British experience, given a breath of life by Hush's Gin & Jam cocktails, all featuring Hush's London-distilled boutique gin.

Each cocktail has been curated to reflect the more unusual elements of the Hush gin, whose flavours include Jasmine lotus, Tonka beans and lavender, each one paired with a jam base created exclusively for Hush by Wendy Brandon, who has been making handmade jams and preserves in the UK for over 30 years.

Starting with a 'Kensington Gardens' welcome cocktail (Hush Gin, Lime, Cranberry, Vanilla, Wendy Brandon Strawberry Jam) served in a Tipsy Teacups martini glass, Gin & Jam guests then enjoy a choice of gin cocktails to accompany their tea, such as the Primrose Hill  (Hush Gin, Cinnamon, Pineapple, Ginger Beer and Wendy Brandon Gooseberry and Rhubarb Jam) or London Fields (Hush Gin, Jasmine, Pear and Emperador Tea).

Our chic but informal ground floor Brasserie is a popular place to enjoy either breakfast, lunch or dinner in the heart of Mayfair.

Not forgetting the ever popular Hush Hamburger, voted Best Burger in London by The Evening Standard.

Hush Mayfair has been in the business of making cocktails for 18 years, and all their hard work paid of this year as they walked away with the title of Best Bar in London at the London Club and Bar Awards.

With a strong penchant for the finer things in life (and award-winning bars), I visited their upstairs Aviator lounge to sample cocktails inspired by all corners of the globe; from Europe all the way to Asia.

This cocktail festival hosted their summer event in July and there was one cocktail that stood out from the herd: Head in the Game - Crystal Head Vodka, Violet Liqueur, Luc Belaire Rosé, fresh apple juice and fresh berries.

This dangerously delicious cocktail can be found in ‘The American Expedition’ section of the menu at Aviator, and comes served in a sanded down Crystal Head Vodka skull that’s painted with bright, vivid colours.

Our next cocktail choice jetted us from Canada and Russia to Italy with the Roman Holiday, and France with the Champagne Jacuzzi.

Restaurant Review: Hush, Mayfair | The London Economic

A hidden gem, situated off the beaten track on Lancashire Court, Hush has been a Mayfair mainstay for eighteen years, having recently undergone a facelift under the watchful eye of Russell Sage.

Classic dishes such as whole Dover Sole, sirloin Tagliata and a hamburger (with or without truffled brie) are joined by contemporary spins, including duck confit shepherd’s pie.

Hush’s classic steak tartare (£15), as opposed to a ‘chipotle’ version, stirs memories of the famous Mr Bean sketch, so far as it looks exactly the same as the raw beef burger that Rowan Atkinson’s character fruitlessly attempts to escape.

Hush’s take on the classic (£7) is dressed up with whisky and brown butter, favouring brioche bread.

A classic, unspoilt, unstuffy Mayfair institution – the al fresco courtyard at Hush is one of the city’s most comfortable, so be sure to take advantage of the set up before the rain makes an unwelcome reappearance.
