Carpo London - Life & Soul Lifestyle

Review analysis

I recently discovered that Carpo, a newly opened nuts, dried fruit, chocolate and coffee store in the heart of London is the place for high quality snacks.

Located in the middle of Piccadilly Circus, Carpo is definitely different from the average store found at such a location but strangely enough, it fits right in and it’s easy to see why.

The store is named after Carpo the Greek goddess tasked with ripening and harvesting fruit in autumn and providing food for the people.

Apart from its nuts, dried fruit and chocolate, Carpo also boasts some of the best tasting coffee in the capital – their iced cappuccino consisting of espresso topped with whipped icy foam is definitely worth a try.

Highlights It was impossible to sample everything Carpo has to offer in one short visit but I did give it a go and here’re some of my favourites: Wasabi Nuts: Green coated nuts with wasabi Chocolate, Strawberry and Pink pepper: The flavours hit the taste buds in exactly that order –in one word, delicious!

Ergon – London

Under the word Ergon on the menu is a simple statement ‘Food tastes better shared’ what a good philosophy this is.

Meanings have relevance here, there is certainly a philosophy to share and also they have the heat of the oven producing food to the ‘quantity of heat’.

My Greek yoghurt mousse with wonderfully gooey honeycomb was tart and sweet, an absolute hit, a very good end to a meal, I thoroughly recommend it.

M chose (as is her way) a challenge, a giant layered cake of baklavas with a sweet nutty syrup (they like their syrups here) and a kind of nutty chocolate filling, imagine Nutella but more so.

Yes, it’s a good place to get lost in ones own thoughts and enjoy honest food with a modern twist.

Sartoria

This is a classic Italian restaurant with charming staff and food full of flavour.

Our starters were very good M had Pio Tosini Parma ham with figs which as well as being generous had that taste you don’t find often outside Italy.

My wild duck with cocoa sauce and autumn greens tasted fantastic but I would say that the duck was just a little on the tough side.

M had a mouthwatering fillet of beef with a giant dollop of Burrata cheese sitting on top with olive puree.

Sartoria really measures up on many levels, it has excellent food, faultless service, very comfortable environment and to top it all it is situated in one of London’s classiest streets, where else could you have that all important first fitting with your tailor and afterwards pop over the road for a bespoke plate of food?

Kick-start your day at Ergon London with freshly brewed specialty coffee and finger-licking good Greek food, pies and snacks.

You can’t buy happiness, but Ergon London claims that with just a few bucks you can buy a really good cup of Joe and seriously delicious Greek delicacies, which is pretty much the same as happiness.

Need a freshly brewed filter coffee, a pick-me-up flat white or even a quick Greek coffee?

Add to this an extremely delicious freshly baked bougatsa (Greek custard-filled phyllo pastries), a generous slice of tyropita (feta cheese-filled pie) or spanakopita (Greek spinach-filled pie) and you have the equation to an awesome Greek-style breakfast.

Don’t forget to take a look at the stalls around the place where you will find some very interesting traditional Greek products, from olive oil and Kalamata olives to Greek wine and anchovies.

It’s a great day when a new Greek restaurant opens up in town.

It’s time to show Londoners that Greek restaurants are, well, nothing like hummus and kebabs, and I am very happy to see remarkable venues like Ergon popping up.

Greek casual and comfort food, good specialty coffee, and carefully selected deli products from all over Greece is the standard at Ergon.

If you ask a Greek why they would go to Ergon, the answer would be freddo.

“We want to make authentic Greek food for everyone” George Douzis, co-owner, and operator of Ergon told me one of the many times I paid him a visit at the shop.

Put up with the squeeze, though, and there’s lots to like: sleek industrial-chic design, a basement deli full of beautifully packaged Greek artisan products, and a kitchen overseen by Athenian celeb-chef Dimitris Skarmoutsos.

It has been a lightning-fast hit with the capital’s homesick Greeks: there was a full (and almost entirely Hellenic) house for lunch on our visit.

There’s an all-Greek wine list, mojitos made with chios mastiha liqueur, and a modern mezédes menu (all of which is designed to be shared) that’ll banish memories of day-glo meze dips forever.

A modern take on the classic saganáki (oat-rolled naxos gravièra cheese with rose petal syrup) looked great but was served far too cold.

The Athenian café-culture vibe here lends itself more to an informal lunch or post-splurge evening snack than a long, leisurely dinner, but either way Ergon is another bold step forward for Greek cuisine in the capital.
