It takes just the mere whiff of a chill to have me craving the cathartic comfort of Chinese cooking; so the recent cold snap in London presented just the occasion to return to an old-favourite – China Tang.

While the first week of January might be a quiet time for most restaurants, it’s the very opposite here at China Tang where the Cantonese style of cuisine can always be relied upon to feed our seasonal proclivity for comfort food.

The Traditional Toffee Temptation is a real triumph, with the warm toffee sauce soaking all the way through the steamed date sponge – it’s moist richness offset by a high-grade Madagascar vanilla ice cream.

We leave on a gloriously-satiated note – the stellar service having gone that few steps further to ensure that our evening delivered everything we would have expected at China Tang… and more.

Dim sum.

Our dim sum are so delicious that we have to serve them all day in the bar.

China Tang is the latest venture for Tang, the cigar-toting millionaire clothier whose global business interests include private members' clubs in Hong Kong and the Cipriani restaurant in London.

The star turn at China Tang is the Peking duck served in three courses: as pancakes; as soup; and then as a stir-fry.

As I bite the pancake, I find crisp diamonds of duck skin with the sweet fat weeping underneath, alongside melting wafers of roast meat with a strong, clean flavour.

The whole point of Peking duck is that it should taste of duck, not the spicy or sweet honey flavours that are sometimes painted on less flavourful birds by kitchens that frazzle it in a deep-fat fryer instead of roasting it.

When it is done carefully and properly, like this, Peking duck is a subtle and lovely dish, as far removed from those fibrous stands of fatty duck meat-soused sugary sauces than you can imagine.
