Zayna

Zayna reflects the personality of Riz Dar who spent his formative years around Kashmir and Punjab and whose first job was in his father's restaurant in Pakistan.

Free-range meat and traditional recipes such as gurda qeema, where spiced minced lamb is mixed with finely chopped kidneys, make the menu unusually inviting.

Very nice, adequate and unobtrusive service and excellent food in a nice offer of Indian traditionals and surprising Indian dishes.

This is our first visit to your excellent restaurant.

A must visit venue for us when we come to LONDON Very enjoyable meal, all the food was well spiced just to our taste everything was freshly prepared and well served !

Prices were a lot higher than a regular high street curry house, with £19 for jheenga prawns and £13 even for some vegetarian dishes.

Jheenga prawns (a south Indian dish in origin) used large prawns that were marinated and then stir-fried with a green masala sauce.

The prawns were very good, with no telltale iodine tang that often happens with cheaper farmed prawns, the shellfish tender and nicely balanced with the masala sauce, which uses curry leaves, ginger, garlic, chilli, coriander and mint.

Similarly, chicken biryani (£15) had chunks of carefully cooked chicken that retained their moisture, but above all the rice was delicate and suffused with spices, a fragrant and classy dish (14/20).

However the surroundings are smart and the cooking was good, the ingredients of a higher quality level than in most high street curry places, and service was fine.

In search of a good Indian meal around Marble Arch, I was about to go to Les Port Des Indes, which has somewhat past its sell by date.

Now the street has several choices from Indian, Chinese to a pub.

We didn’t have that much to eat as it was a quick meal but here are the dishes that caught my eye and will be back to try : Biryani Shah Jahani, Kapora Taka Tak (lamb sweet breads cooked with yogurt, ginger, onions and tomatoes) and Gurda Qeema (Pubjabi street food of mince and lamb kidneys).

The dishes we tried were all good, cooked fresh to order and this is reflected in the price.

If you would like a really good Indian meal, you need to try this place.

Gilly and the rest of his company have decided to adopt Zayna as their "pet" restaurant.

With hardly any natural footfall it means that the cooking has to be extraordinary for a restaurant to be successful.

It's a great mix of robust Pakistani flavours, stylish cooking but without the pretense that accompanies some top end Indian restaurants.

Steamed tilapia arrived in a candle warmed bowl, swimming in a delicate, fragrant coconut marsala.

One that I've never seen on an Indian restaurant menu before.
