The Pickled Hen, Marylebone - Eliza Flynn Personal Trainer

The Pickled Hen is situated on the end of George Street and whilst I was initially told it was in Marylebone, I’d say that it’s very much on the outskirts of Marylebone as I know it.

The Pickled Hen is off the main street and the relative calm once inside is welcome.

Despite the name, it’s not an upmarket Nando’s – chicken features on the menu but is by no means the main ingredients in dishes.

For our mains, Tom chose the Pickled Hen Burger which was a beef patty laden with a generous portion of beef brisket and cheese.

Sitting in the Marriott Hotel behind Marble Arch The Pickled Hen is a largish Gastropub with an attractive white tile and wood interior and an intriguing all-day food offer.

These include enticing sounding plates of Woodall’s British charcuterie, crispy halloumi, a pickled fish board and the exciting-sounding Crispy Chicken Scratchings.

The Pickled Hen Whole Roast Chicken was fit for a king.

… but it was a biscuit based raspberry, vanilla, sour cream and cheese construction with a creamy vanilla interior and sweet raspberry coulis on top.

With mains around £14, The Pickled Hen is a great central London option that isn’t going to break the bank and is perfect for an evening out with friends, workmates or family.

The Pickled Hen is a modern take on the great British gastropub.

Set in the heart of Marylebone this cosy restaurant and bar is great for relaxed drinks and trying some traditional British food….

with a pickled twist!

For the peckish lot, try our ‘Pickled Hen’ dish, a whole slow roasted chicken complemented by a variety of Rubies in the Rubbles, award winning relishes for you to tantalise your tastebuds with.

We’re also eggstremely pleased with our great range of wines, craft beers & ciders, plenty of fizz and raising the rooster line-up of cocktails.

Restaurant Review: The Pickled Hen, Marylebone

Even the menus follow the same theme, which ties everything together nicely and pays homage to chicken as an ingredient (with much more imagination than just a selection of chicken wings, as is the case in so many London restaurants) without limiting itself to just this one component.

To start, although  tempted by the baked camembert and crispy halloumi, we choose ‘The Chicken & The Egg’ (£8) and a fig and caramelised red onion tart (£7.50).

The breadcrumbs covering the egg and the smashed peas give a distinct Fish and Chips feel to the dish and with properly cooked, still juicy, chicken terrine – this is one to remember.

For mains, The Pickled Hen burger (£12.50)  is served on a paper-covered tray in the manner of many a London burger joint.

Having said that, there were one or two dishes I would return to try and based on the quality of the Yorkshire Pudding, the roasted vegetables and the chicken terrine, I suspect a chicken Sunday Lunch may well be on the cards in the near future.
