The Golden Hind | Marylebone Restaurant Never take anything you find in the newspaper too seriously.

Unless it’s fish and chips from The Golden Hind: Marylebone’s more than 100 year old, family run, BYO chippy.

It’s helmed by ex Cypriot fashion designer, Tony, who not only takes the coveted Nudge award for ‘most perplexing career transition in history, ever’, but who also – amidst a dwindling number of once famous central London restaurants – has lovingly retained The Golden Hind’s reputation as, quite simply, a local institution.

The Golden Hind has no prententions, but its brightly lit, basically decorated dining room was doing a roaring trade this evening.

A scampi starter (£3.60) had tolerable batter but perilously little in the way of langoustine (barely 11/20), while prawn cocktail (£3.20) was similarly very limited, with a few small shrimps and a bland Marie Rose sauce (10/20).

However the haddock and chips (£7.70 for the fish, £1.70 for the chips) was an altogether better affair, the batter crisp, the fish inside cooked through nicely, without skin (comfortably 12/20).

I would stick to the fish and chips based on this visit, but if you restricted yourself to these then you would have a perfectly enjoyable meal.

It is remarkably hard to find even competent fish and chips in London, and the Golden Hind certainly delivers in this regard.

ES Food Newsletter There’s a good story in Raymond Blanc’s memoir, A Taste of My Life, where he describes coming to England for the first time and being so eager to sample our cuisine that he started on the ferry, ordering fish and chips, which he had often heard described as "the gastronomic treat of Britain".

Just now, it is certainly soothing to find the bill for a slap-up fish supper at The Golden Hind coming in at under £30.

They all come in excellent batter, crisp all the way through to the fish itself, with no soggy layer underneath, fried in clean groundnut oil.

Some fish-and-chip shop fans, a vocal lot, rate the hand-cut chips here (£1.70 a big portion) inferior to the fish.

The Golden Hind is surely as good a fish and chip shop as London has to offer, at a very fair price, too, for the West End.

Golden Hind - Fish and Chips Restaurant in Marylebone London

Review analysis

Golden Hind in Marylebone has been serving fish and chips for over 100 years.

Golden Hind is included in the Best Fish and Chips in London.

Those chunky chips were not the golden color you may expect but Im told this is the usual way they cook chips here and they were freshly cooked, not greasy, and still tasted great.

We found our meals to be very filling and enjoyable, although I was surprised chips were not included in the price of the fish (who orders just fish at a fish and chips restaurant?)

By that time a couple had already been led to our table and were waiting for us to leave; literally standing behind my chair while I tapped my PIN number into the card payment machine.
