Sandy's

Sandys | Corsican Pizza and Restaurant

I had a huge starter salad of iceberg lettuce and tomatoes with their own divine homemade dressing.

I had asked for Thousand Island, about which the two waitresses had no idea, but in the end their own dressing was perfect.

For my main course I had a large bowl of penne in a tomato and vegetable sauce that was near perfection.

It tasted like my own homemade marinara sauce.

With a focus on very few things (much like Le Relais de Venise do so well) things needed to be perfect – otherwise what reason would you have to come back over the extensive Italian offerings that may be locally?

Since delving into to the delightfully rich, yet zesty sauce – I seem to be seeing it on just about every Italian restaurant menu I look at.

There’s a good reason why this dish is their signature offering, and that’s because they’ve managed to perfect this simple Italian fare and turn it into a showcase of flavours and ingredients.

For lunch I could perhaps see the point of La Tagliata but otherwise I don’t see what this restaurant can offer (apart from a lack of choice) than most other Italian restaurants in London.

Now there are two things to know about Seymour Place – it’s near to Marble Arch tube and is chock full of the type of restaurants that you actually want to eat in.

How Bermondsey St, Golborne Rd and now Seymour Place with its Italian, Corsican and Basque joints have emerged as gastro hubs for the surrounding areas.

Next stop was Lurra, which alongside its near neighbour sister restaurant Donostia offers acclaimed Basque cuisine.

Seymour Place now features an outpost of The Gate – London’s favourite vegetarian restaurant.

We had the opportunity to meet The Gate’s owner Adrian Daniel who explained the ethos of the restaurant and then we noshed on a butternut rotolo stuffed with potato, pumpkin and butternut squash and infused with thyme.

Sandy's | Restaurants in Marylebone, London

This Corsican restaurant in Marble Arch riffs on the Mediterranean island's French and Italian influence, with a menu that borrows from the cuisines of both.

Pizzas with a French bent are the kinds of thing to expect.

In addition to these fusion pizzas (think a 'Napolean Bonaparte', made with tomato, gruyere, ham, mushrooms and olives) the menu features classic Italian pasta dishes, traditional Corsican charcuterie, chevre chaud and a Calvi salad.

Expect bottles from Languedoc, Calvi, Provence, Bourgogne and Epernay, with a couple from Chile thrown in for good measure.
