Situated in one of London’s vibrant and coveted locations on the corner of Blandford Street and Manchester Street, Clarette is a chic, refined and stylish new wine bar, nestled in the heart of Marylebone.

Split across four areas, including an elegant second-floor private dining room, wine-loving novices and connoisseurs alike can sip, smell and swirl their way through a carefully selected wine list focusing on magnificent French wines and some carefully selected wines from around the world.

Guests of Clarette are able to enjoy old favourites, or discover new grape types, wine regions and styles, with a selection available by the glass from only £5.

The exciting food menu, featuring delicious sharing plates has been designed to perfectly compliment the wines.

The team behind the wine bar is one of the big draws: Alexandra Petit and Thibault Pontallier both have ties to Bordeaux estate Château Margaux (Petit is the owner’s daughter, Pontallier its global ambassador), while restaurateur Natsuko Perromat du Marais – who has worked with Alain Ducasse and Anne-Sophie Pic – came recommended by Pontallier’s brother during the pair’s search for an expert food-industry partner.

The aesthetics reflect the owners’ vision for an inviting “quality-casual experience”, says Perromat du Marais, and unlike most other recent additions to London’s wine bar scene, Clarette consciously decided not to become a private members’ club, but something more accessible.

The list also has a featured producer section – currently Burgundy’s Taupenot-Merme, whose 2008 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru (£30 a glass) comes highly recommended, and moving to Burgenland’s Moric in July – as well as some top wines under Coravin (glasses of 2010 Meursault Buisson-Charles and 2000 Grand Puy Ducasse would make a great pair at £19 and £20 respectively).

And the special collection of vintages in Château Margaux’s cellar has yielded Pavillon Rouge 1996 (£440 a magnum) and the particularly noteworthy Margaux 1999 (£525 a bottle), arguably the wine of the vintage, both of which are drinking well now and are fairly priced.

A smaller private dining room on the second floor seats 14 for a more intimate soirée, while the owners’ experience of living in New York means they are enthusiastic to open for weekend brunch, and from September there are plans to host regular wine dinners upstairs.

The past few months have seen drinking establishments such as Nape and Winemakers Club keeping the neighbourhoods of south London well watered whilst recently opened Furanxo and Newcomer Wines continue to delight those further East.

Marylebone will soon have a new wine bar of its own with the opening of Clarette on the corner of Blandford and Manchester Street.

That said, the London project is a standalone venture that's independent of the wine estate.

Included at the relative lower end is a 2012 vintage Margaux du Château Margaux (the third wine of the estate) sold as a house special at £15 a glass, which those in-the-know will tell you is incredibly good value.

For Clarette, that location is one of impeccably dressed women clutch Mulberry, Hermes and Fendi as they walk flower-lined streets.

The intention is understandable, but it pulls the tomato too harshly between sweet and savoury, a balance that is better achieved with the shavings of umami rich cheese.

Petit Burgers are two precise little pucks of beautiful beef, topped with cheese and sandwiched in a brioche bun.

Again cooked to perfection, the cod flakes beautifully and its light, clean taste is complemented by a generous portion of rich Romanesco.

When light comes streaming in through beautiful stained glass windows, there’s an infectious sense of elegance.
