Boxcar Butcher & Grill, Marylebone: restaurant review | Foodism

Sure, there's a delicious-sounding vegetarian offering (we'd smash a portobello mushroom and black bean burger any day) but if you're here for anything, you're here for a big hunk of that ethically sourced, best-of-British meat.

A splash of ruby-coloured 2016 Guarda Rios – a red blend from the Monte da Ravasqueira estate in Portugal's Alentejo region – wouldn't go amiss next to the 45-day dry-aged rare breed Boxcar burger, if we don't say so ourselves.

A choice of cuts, as well as Boxcar's daily specials, are chalked up on the wall, but you can't knock a good old slice of sirloin – especially when it's 28 day-aged and done up from a well-tended-to North Yorkshire Galloway.

A plate of Tenderstem broccoli, gently sautéed with chilli and garlic, wouldn't go amiss, but don't feel like you need to go green – Boxcar's beef is so juicy and flavoursome, it speaks for itself.

Plus, if you were sensible, you would have dived into the Dinton Farm scotch egg – with its bright orange jewel of a yolk and tangy apple sauce – and the crisp yorkshire pud with liver parfait when you kicked off proceedings, leaving little room for distractions, never mind dessert.

Summing it all up: Eat prime cuts of meat sourced from trusted suppliers that've been butchered in house at this new butcher-to-grill restaurant on Marylebone's New Quebec Street, which will also be selling meat to go, and pastries, pies and more via its deli.

If you like to know where your meat comes from, the Marylebone’s new Boxcar Butcher & Grill will be right up your street.

There’ll only be three menu items available each day - a sirloin steak, a burger, and, somewhat confusingly, a veggie option - but each one will be lovingly created from prime cuts, sourced from ethically raised meat that’s been butchered in house, on the restaurant’s lower floor.

There’ll be a nearby meat hanging room so you can see which cuts are on offer that day, so great for meat lovers, terrible for those who are a touch squeamish about where their beef really comes from.

As well as the restaurant, there’ll also be a butcher’s selling meat for you to take home, with experts on hand to answer any questions on where it comes from and how cook it.

A friendly butcher-cum-restaurant with a large butcher’s counter, deli and grill focussing on burgers, pies and steaks made with ethically reared meat sourced from small British farms.

On a Sunday, Boxcar offers a shorter menu, but adds on its Sunday roast special – 28-day-aged North Yorkshire Galloway sirloin steak with crisp roast potatoes, seasonal veg (carrot and swede mash, greens and parsnips on our visit), fluffy homemade Yorkshire puddings and a rich bone marrow gravy.

The hearty butcher’s board was a masterclass in British antipasti – little discs of ham hock terrine packed together with honey and wholegrain mustard, deep-fried lamb scrumpets (soft meat made from lamb shoulder), a runny scotch egg packed with sausage meat, slices of salt beef brisket, and a fragrant and creamy celeriac coleslaw with Bread Factory sourdough on the side.

Traditional British puds are executed very well – homemade sticky toffee pudding with silky butterscotch sauce and a thick dollop of clotted cream was extremely comforting.

Boxcar also acts as a butcher and deli to pick up British produce – Luscombe soft drinks from Devon, The Estate Dairy milk (the chocolate milk collab with Pump Street Bakery is heavenly), crumbly Sussex cheeses and plenty of sausages and bacon to make a full English at home.

ES Food Newsletter With Ginger Pig on Moxon Street long flying the flag for the best of British meat, Marylebone is not the London locale most in need of some fine flesh.

Somewhat cleverly, this new arrival – which comes from Barry Hirst, the man behind The Thomas Cubitt and The Orange among other pubs and restaurants – manages to do a bit of everything and keep things remarkably simple at the same time.

Meat in Marylebone: Boxcar Grill At every stage, though, the offering comes back to more or less one thing: the meat.

For mains, there’s a short selection of steaks, a couple of burgers and whatever you find in the butcher’s fridge should you want that to be cooked.
