Winter Garden Restaurant

Winter Garden Restaurant - The Landmark London Hotel

The original roof covered only the ground floor.

The roof was then changed to a higher floor to make the inside courtyard a grand ‘winter garden’, hence the name that has continued to remain.

In the fifties, the roof was completely removed by the British Railway who had taken over the building at the time and it was not until 1991 that it was put back on, as it is today.

Located adjacent to Marylebone Station, The Landmark, London, is a visually outstanding 5 star hotel which screams luxury.

Built in 1899, the hotel has gone by various different names and owners over the years; today it resides under the current ownership of the Lancaster London Hotel Company and renamed the Landmark London.

So whether you are looking for beauty treatments or massage, a swim in the chlorine-free pool, or just the need to relax in the sauna, steam room or hot tub, the Landmark Spa can cater for all your individual needs.

En route we paid a visit to the floor above the mezzanine which looks down onto the restaurant, for a spot of window shopping in the numerous luxury boutiques within the hotel.

Whilst there is no hot buffet as such, much better is an extensive hot breakfast menu, all cooked fresh and to order; whether you are after traditional full English, pancakes, waffles, kippers or all variations of egg dishes, your appetite will be satisfied and leave you wanting to return to try something else from the menu.

The Landmark London, Winter Garden restaurant: afternoon tea ...

But comfortable armchairs, soft lighting and crisp white tablecloths brings a bit of British to the table, and helps provide the perfect setting for a chocolate afternoon tea.

The Landmark London has a variety of special blend teas – the Landmark Blend has a subtle sweet hint of Bourbon vanilla, while the Winter Garden Blend is a more traditional and aromatic afternoon tea blend (we highly recommend both).

The two varieties of scones (plain and chocolate chip with fruit peel) were not as large and fluffy as we hoped they would be, but the delicate gooseberry and elderflower jam saved the day.

Combined with the light chatter of other guests and the clinking of china teacups, we were transported away from the hustle and bustle of central London to elegant, traditional Britain for the afternoon.

Star of the show: gooseberry and elderflower jam Perfect for: an afternoon escape from the hustle and bustle of London Price: £45 for classic afternoon tea; £52-58 with a glass of Champagne; £48 chocolate afternoon tea Please note from 2nd May – 28th May The Landmark will only be serving there Chelsea flower show afternoon tea which includes a glass of champagne £55 For more information, visit the Landmark London website.

From the outside, its archetypically Victorian façade immediately gives away the building’s roots as one of London’s great railway hotels – one of several constructed during the golden age of steam travel; the other tell-tale clue being its adjacency to Marylebone station.

The beating heart of the hotel is the grand atrium with its Winter Garden restaurant and elegant public spaces.

This is best illustrated by the Gazebo, where guests can take afternoon tea or grab a bite to eat, but can also double up as a space for a drinks reception for the hotel’s numerous corporate events.

The 11 meeting and event spaces – with a capacity ranging from intimate 6-person interviews right up to 750-people drinks receptions – not only incorporate the elegance of the hotel as a whole, but also provide functionality and the state-of-the-art technical facilities required.

With the hotel having gone through a series of renovations throughout its various incarnations and long but not-always illustrious history, I was fascinated to discover that the current, healthy selection of 300 rooms and suites is less than half of the building’s original 700-room offering.

However, the Landmarks central atrium has to be the most distinctive feature of the hotel, and as you walk in the front doors you quickly notice the change from the Gothic exterior to the light and open interior.

The central 8 story glass-roofed atrium is filled with towering palm trees and is home to the iconic Winter Garden restaurant and raised gazebo.

My reason for visiting the Landmark Hotel was a late Valentines and Birthday surprise for my other half at the 2 AA rosette holding Winter Garden.

Set at the heart of the impressive atrium, the restaurant serves up high-end British and Mediterranean dishes throughout the day to hotel guests and non-guests alike.

A trip to any luxury hotel restaurant isn’t complete without a little nosey around the rest of the hotel, especially when it’s as lavish as the Landmark.
