The Gate restaurants are hugely popular with London’s vegetarians and vegans, with many considering them some of the best veggie restaurants in London.
The image of veggie joints has suffered terribly under the shadow of a thousand failed nut roasts and watery lentil stews but places like The Gate are doing a fine job of showing us otherwise.
On a Monday lunch time this Seymour Place branch is filled with locals discussing business, and snippets of thrilling conversation are overheard as deals close and backs are slapped.
The plates are as lively as the clientele, and a starter of miso aubergine is powerfully flavoured; rich, salty and sweet.
This classic Japanese preparation sees the aubergine scored, brushed with a sweetened miso mixture and grilled, resulting in an intensely flavoured vegetable, almost meaty in it savouriness (see what they did there).

City of Westminster It is impossible to even begin to capture everything that Westminster - the seat of Britain's government - has to offer.
From stately Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament to the raucous Soho nightlife, from the bustle of Oxford Street, to the rolling vistas of the Royal Parks it would take weeks to describe everything to see and do in London's heartland.
It also contains some of the best shopping in London, with Covent Garden's bustling market, the boutiques of Soho and Carnaby Street, and the towering department stores around Oxford Circus.
As the shops close, London's West End comes alive, with dozens of theatres and music venues, and hundreds of bars and restaurants making sure that this is a borough that never sleeps.

Our Story The cooking at the Gate reflects the diverse cultural background in which we grew up – what one might call Indo-Iraqi Jewish.
Our grandmothers blended Indian and Arabic cuisines with traditional Jewish food.It seemed perfectly natural that we should apply the same principles at the restaurant.
The food we serve is the food of our childhood, modulated by French and Italian influences.
When we opened the Gate, we had had no formal training and knew nothing about running a restaurant – we were just a couple of guys who knew what we liked to eat – but we knew that food was sacred and should be celebrated. At the restaurant we try to do just that: celebrate the food.
We try to make our dishes as visually pleasing as possible; and we try and do this in a fun and relaxed way.

Inspired by their grandmother's home cooking, the two brothers behind The Gate Seymour Place pay homage to their Indo-Iraqi Jewish background, serving stunning vegetarian dishes that celebrate flavours from all over the vast Asian continent.
The restaurant is based on Seymour Place and is just a short stroll from Edgware Road tube station.
The menu of delectable dishes is undoubtedly the crowning glory of this restaurant.
Focusing on traditional recipes, every dish is composed of ingredients from across Asia, and will wonderful twist and twirl flavour combinations from both the Arabian and the Indian world.
Veggies rejoice: The Gate's new Marylebone branch to offer breakfast
food
It’s a nicely imaginative selection - scrambled tofu with smoky shiitake mushrooms, bagels with avocado and organic poached eggs, spinach omelette with sunflower seeds, or potted chia with banana, halva and pecans will be on offer.
For those arriving later in the day, there’ll be plenty of familiar dishes on offer at Seymour Place, such as their aubergine teriyaki with crispy noodles, or Green Dragon tofu salad with pak choi and sweet potato.
There’ll also be some new dishes on offer, like the three-way filled globe artichoke and the wild mushroom rotolo, a cannelloni-esque stuffed pasta.
“We’re excited to be bringing our vegetarian dining to even more people, in Central London and in particular in Seymour Place among many fellow independents and in a venue which affords us a bigger stage for our inventive and carefully-honed cooking,” said co-founder Michael Daniel.
The Gate opens on 1 December 2016 at 22-24 Seymour Place, London W1H 7NL.

First launched in Hammersmith, The Gate, however, has been operating for over twenty-seven years, and is one of few restaurants to have gained a solid reputation for an exclusively meat-free menu before the turn of the century.
Pastes of red lentil enhanced with smoked paprika and tomato, basil-laced green lentil and beluga lentil with olive are pressed into a pretty-looking slab – like Neapolitan ice cream with a natural palette.
On the other side of the table, The Gate’s take on schnitzel favours trendy aubergine over flattened meat that’s often overcooked to the point of dryness.
In addition, the plate is also dressed with smoked cheddar plus basil pesto, tomatoes and roasted red peppers to compliment the sweetness of the aubergine – making for an enjoyable, flesh-free riff on the Central European classic.
In addition to serving a selection of well-executed dishes, the latest opening of The Gate continues to prove that vegetarian food needn’t be unexciting.

On a charming street in Marylebone, where even the launderette looks lovely, sits the latest branch of veggie restaurant The Gate.
And with plenty of bistro-style pavement seating it’s a lovely spot for sitting in the sun, sinking some scrummy organic wine – of which they have a brilliant selection – and pretending you’re in Paris.
The Gate is kind of like that good-on-paper boyfriend – Aidan from ‘Sex and the City’, if you will.
The Gate may not be the kind of long-distance love affair I’d cross town for, but it’s worth visiting if you’re in the area.
