Seymour's Parlour | Marble Arch London

Step inside Seymour’s Parlour and you’re transported back in time.

This Georgian townhouse bar is a world away from the bustling street outside, owned by the fictional Wicked Uncle Seymour.

Step over the threshold and into his recreation room to find a dimly lit, red painted parlour stuffed with comfy armchairs, knick knacks and candlesticks.

Tony Conigliaro is one of the world’s best designers of drinks and it is he who has curated the list here.

The bar is one of the best in town, table service swift and professional, and it’s not long before you’ll be supping a perfect martini (served in a glass of Tony’s design), or something more creative from their well crafted list.

The Zetter Townhouse Marylebone - Marylebone, London - England ...

As we walked into the Zetter Townhouse, Marylebone, we felt like we were stepping back in time (but in the best possible way).

The hotel’s rooms are all impossibly chic, while retaining that old-school British cosiness that, frankly – in a world of pared-back Scandi chic and minimalism – we all want a bit more of: dark-wood antique beds, bold velvet chairs and traditional deep-pile carpets, the rooms are the ultimate in comfort.

A Continental breakfast is served at the hotel, as well as a decent snack menu (anywhere with Scotch eggs and sausage rolls on its menu is a winner with us), but if you need something more substantial, the Zetter’s location is as good as it gets for restaurants – we enjoyed an excellent roast from gastropub (and fellow Smith stay) the Grazing Goat just around the corner, and tapas plates at Donostia were all delicious – Basque cuisine with a really buzzing atmosphere is a winning combination.

Wandering through the hotel, on the way back to our room, we realised it would’ve been criminal not to try one of the infamous cocktails from Seymour's Parlour.

For its lucky guests, this outpost of the Zetter Townhouse is more than a hotel, it's home for the nights you stay there, and the staff really make you feel that way, too.

Seymour's Parlour, The Zetter Townhouse Marylebone: afternoon ...

We kicked off afternoon tea with a round of tea-infused cocktails created by drinks pioneer Tony Conigliaro.

After our cocktails, a series of tea stands and plates that made up Aunt Wilhelmina and Uncle Seymour’s afternoon teas arrived.

For a less traditional and more substantial savoury round, opt for Uncle Seymour’s tea – little puff pastry sausage rolls were stuffed with haggis and topped with a punchy homemade brown sauce, and the Lincolnshire pork pie had a good crunch to the crust with tangy piccalilli on the side.

Our afternoon tea was given a festive touch in the sweet round with a clove mulled wine jelly (usually a Kir Royale jelly) that came set in a plastic cocktail glass with tiny pieces of apple at the bottom.

£28 per person including a pot of tea, add a cocktail for £9.50 each Got you in the mood for afternoon tea?

Seymour's Parlour at the Zetter Townhouse: A beacon of decent drinks

It’s a 21 bedroom hotel with a dark, sumptuous cocktail lounge downstairs, where cocktails have been curated by titan mixologist Tony Conigliaro.

Still, there were no gruff old men in corners and the atmosphere was terrific, with the bar busy the entire night.

Order: The bar, bustling away in the corner, is a beacon of goodness, though not everything hit the mark – the Royale Royale (champagne with, er, champagne syrup) is tasty but pointless, though there are plenty of compensatory highlights.

Winner of the list is the Two Pennie Trash (rye, powdered malts and treacle), but the Last Laugh (cognac, cider apple brandy, apple caramel and apple wood bitters) is close behind, while Le Sphinx (orange neroli honey, ambrette bitters and champagne) is a sweet take on a classic champagne cocktail.

By the way: The bar is popular enough that they take rounds of bookings, so you’re unlikely to hold onto your table all night.

The Zetter Townhouse Marylebone Afternoon Tea Review: What We ...

It’s the sort of tea that the wicked Uncle Seymour and great Aunt Wilhelmina (the two characters who “own” Zetter Townhouse Marylebone and Zetter Townhouse Clerkenewell respectively) would tuck into come four o’clock.

28-30 Seymour Street, Marylebone, W1H 7JB, www.thezettertownhouse.com On the Menu: The tea is divided into Uncle Seymour and Aunt Wilhelmina, so whilst both teas have the same cakes, think winter punch jelly, macaroons, chocolate cakes and the same scones, you can choose how it starts.

Uncle Seymour’s tea is meatier and heartier with a Lincolnshire pork pie with piccalilli and a haggis sausage roll, whilst Aunt Wilhelmina’s tea has sloe gin glazed ham finger sandwiches and Chapel & Swan smoked salmon on herb crème fraîche.

Dark red walls are covered in cornice plaster, candelabras and paintings in ornate gilt frames.

What We Ate: Of course we ordered both Uncle Seymour’s and Aunt Wilhelmina’s tea and we suggest you do the same – that way you can try a little bit of everything.

Seymour’s Parlour, in the new Zetter Townhouse hotel, looks like the home of a well-travelled, eccentric booze collector.

It feels more intimate than the original Zetter in Clerkenwell.

Unchanged is the quality of the house cocktails, a new selection (£9.50) devised by bar supremo Tony Conigliaro.

Like Zetter, Seymour’s Parlour is not expensive given the setting and the quality of the drinks.

It’s the perfect spot for an intimate cocktail experience, with engaging surroundings and bartenders willing to accommodate even the pickiest.
