Restaurant Review: Orrery | CALIBRE

Yes, quite a few of the staff are French, but the menu, while obviously Gallic-inspired, sparkles with Mediterranean creativity and the wine list is nothing short of superb, showcasing a wide range of wines from all corners of the globe.

The elegant, narrow dining room is simply, and perhaps sparsely, decorated, the main attraction is the large windows and full-length skylight offering great views of, well, Marylebone High Street.

Kentish rump of lamb and Dorset sea bass followed, embellished with some pommes puree and green vegetables.

“What an unexpected find,” he muttered, finishing his Camembert and I could not agree more – Marylebone High Street was not my first choice to go looking for high-end French cooking, imbued with a Mediterranean panache.

The Orrery is for lovers of brilliantly executed French cuisine, attentive service and extensive wine lists.

For the latest in our Famous London Restaurants series we visit Orrery, a gastronomic highlight of Marylebone for almost two decades.

But while things inside have remained constant the area around it has blossomed, becoming a food hub where restaurants like The Providores rub shoulders with produce meccas such as Ginger Pig and La Fromagerie.

More generally London’s food scene has moved on quite substantially too, and Orrery’s relative position has changed — its white tablecloths now feel almost retro, its polished, formal service is novel, and the classical French cuisine it serves stands out against the grain.

Orrery is often described a neighbourhood restaurant, and indeed it is much-love by locals, but its catchment area is much bigger than that.

Classics Revisited: Orrery restaurant

From The Ginger Pig to La Fromagerie, the farmers’ market to Kusmi Tea, Marylebone is London’s best-fed neighbourhood.

And as with so much of London’s food scene, it’s thanks to Terence Conran.

Or rather, a combination of Conran and The Howard de Walden Estate, which approached Sir Terence to launch Orrery at the top end of Marylebone High Street in 1997, with Waitrose opening at the bottom end of the street, and the cornucopia of foodie bounty we know today in the middle like the most greedily filled sandwich.

Few restaurants get to redefine an area and fewer still last long enough to celebrate their 21st birthday, so Orrery (now part of D&D London) can be forgiven for wishing to do so in some style, even if it has meant the near heresy of re-doing Conran’s original designs.

Michelin-starred restaurants are normally shrines to carnivorism; their menus splashed with bloody Kobe beef and endless variants of foie gras.

This attitude, however, is entirely absent on Marylebone High Street, where the Michelin-starred Orrery offers a menu potager - a vegetarian tasting menu.

According to the head chef, it's not so much a case of placating the hungry veggies as simply offering a fresher, lighter option - apparently nearly 10-15% of diners who go for the full menu opt for it.

The highlight was undoubtedly an excellent creamy red wine risotto, which had a satisfying crunch of peas and fine green beans.

It's not cheap, but then meals at quality Michelin-starred restaurants never are.

The Ukrainian chef Igor Tymchyshyn has achieved the seemingly impossible – a £26 menu du jour of exceptional beauty, glamour and flavour.

A starter of lobster bisque with seafood raviolo was pure luxury; chicken liver pâté was served on a raft of toasted Poilâne, heaped with tangy apple chutney and scattered with pea shoots.

A main course of salmon was offered – and came – slightly pink, its quotidian flavours transformed by caramelised fennel and butternut squash; beef à la bordelaise was tender and fabulous.

Dine on the rooftop terrace in summer and save up for the £60 menu gourmand (scallops, lobster and foie gras).
