Earl Ferrers in Streatham, London Pub Review and Details

food   drinks

Located round the back of Streatham Go-Karting track, on the corner in a grid of Victorian terrace houses, this place oozes an updated but genuine charm that other revamped gastro pubs can only dream of.

Although this is a small pub, they've managed to tuck a pool table in around the back so the drinkers and eaters don't have to shift their chairs and keep a look out for errant cues bumping into them.

But, for us at least, one of the pub's greatest attributes is its inclusion within the local community.

And to top it off in these cooler winter nights, it's got a real fireplace.

Top marks for a top pub.

Earl Ferrers | Londonist

This pub was chosen for inclusion by the Londonist editorial team.

'You'll like this pub', we said.

Customers are at the centre of everything, from the community notice board to the open-DJ nights (Mondays), when you can hand your mp3 player to the staff for public playback.

There's also a monthly 'community night' and craft night, plus a quiz (Wednesday).

Unusually for a suburban corner pub, you'll also find a selection of cocktails.

On warm summer days, there are few finer places to bask than the pub's charming beer garden.

• 56 Royal Hill SE10, +44 (0)20-8692 6258, greenwichunion.com Streatham (or St Reatham, as aspirational locals increasingly have it) is a surprising "off-guidebook" place to find a decent drink, and The Earl Ferrers is among London's finest "local" pubs.

• 208-209 High Holborn WC1, +44 20-7405 8816 This place looks like a thousand other hotel bars up and down the country … until you take into account its location: reached via a half-hidden lift in the lobby of St George's hotel.

• St George's Hotel W1, +44 (0)20-7580 0111, saintgeorgeshotel.com Hidden away in the back streets of Stroud Green in Finsbury Park, the ivy-covered Faltering Fullback is four pubs in one.
