The Elgin | British Pub and Music Venue | Notting Hill

Review analysis

The Elgin is an opulent hidden gem, with a rich and vibrant history situated in the iconic Notting Hill area of West London.

Our pub boasts an original listed bar, bustling outside area, real wood fireplaces, British seasonal menu, chock-full of classics you know and love with our own little twists.

We welcome all dogs into our pub, however we must ask that they remain in our bar areas only.

The Elgin: Trying too hard (June 2017) – Gastropub, Maida Vale The Elgin, a seemingly on-trend gastropub, has come a long way from its existence as a boozer for old soaks - the format in which I first visited this venue some twenty years ago.

Sure, it has improved in many ways and is much loved by the yummy mummies of Maida Vale (babyccino, anyone?)

Disappointment number-one came in the form of an announcement from our server that we would be forced to return our table by 3pm since another party had requested it after this time.

Disappointment number-two came in the form that several of the dishes on the menu were simply not available: no squid starter and also the somewhat implausible assertion that the Elgin had 'run out' of cheeseburgers before 2pm.

Now, another gripe: how many five-year old children willingly want to eat 'wild garlic-infused' chips?

The Grocer on Elgin

Our meals are beautifully presented in elegant, clear packaging displaying and retaining the true colour and flavour of the freshly cooked food, free from artificial additives and GMOs.

Our chefs have created the perfect, nutritious family meal, corporate lunch or dinner party.

The Elgin, a gastropub perched halfway down Ladbroke Grove, is exactly what you’d expect.

Creamy potatoes provide some much-needed heft, and a tangle of zingy red cabbage and apple slaw keeps the whole thing surprisingly light.

Mixed buttered beans are a great side to have with this dish, perfectly combining the fresh flavours of summer with a little indulgence.

Bright, crisp, full of grapefruit and gooseberry notes, it’s a good pairing with all of our courses but it’s especially good with this gooey panna cotta.

With a great atmosphere and solid food, The Elgin is definitely worth a visit.

The few patrons in place on a Thursday mid-afternoon were dawdling luxuriously in this big, airy neighbourhood hangout, and it was a treat to join them.

This is not just a coffee place.

Nearly everything is made on the premises, including bread, and when something has to be bought in, the barista said, it’s a form of ‘cheating’.

Beans come from Coleman Coffee, and alongside the house espresso blend there are single-estate coffees – rare in espresso.

The barista wasn’t satisfied with his first two attempts for geeky technical reasons, so he persevered – and the third one was glorious, with bright berry notes.
