Vegetarian London: Mosob Restaurant Review | Londonist

Review analysis

We’ve been visiting this charming restaurant since it opened 10 years ago, and have always found something new to taste or learn – for not only do you get food here, you also get an education in Eritrean culture and cuisine.

Everyone dining at Eritrean and Ethiopian restaurants wants to know what the difference between the two cuisines is, as they were both the same country until the 1990s.

The best vegetarian food around the world is often found in vegetarian traditions that are rooted in either poverty or religion – and Eritrean (and indeed Ethiopian) cuisine is no different.

Sharing food – which here goes far beyond the ‘small sharing plates’ concept of trendy London restaurants – is deeply ingrained in Eritrean dining.

And it’s the service – more like warm hospitality at a friend's house – that sets Mosob apart from London’s other Eritrean restaurants.

Mosob Eritrean Restaurant, 339 Harrow Road, Kilburn, London, W9 ...

Given that Eritrea was once a colony of Italy it’s not unusual to see Italian dishes on menus, however it has a distinctive gastronomy in its own right.

At Mosob the only trace of Italian food are desserts like tiramisu and tartufo; instead top billing is given to grilled meats and things like minchetabish, a spicy minced beef casserole with boiled eggs.

Injera, a type of spongy pancake, is served with most dishes to mop up the juices.

food

Eat spicy stews – both vegetarian and not – with spongy injera bread at this friendly Eritrean joint.

A mosob is a handwoven table around which people gather to eat.

In fact, instruction on Eritrean life and culture goes well beyond food, because the people who run Mosob are on a mission to promote their homeland.

But the main event is the cooking, especially the gloriously diverse vegetarian choices; these include beautifully spiced lentils (timtimo), pounded and stewed chickpeas (shiro) and spinach (hamli), and often involve cottage cheese.

Meat eaters also fare well, thanks to the likes of the Mosob special (marinated lamb chops with spinach and lentils) and the muscular combination of hamli mis siga (tender stewed beef with spinach and garlic).
