Tea Trail London

Kusmi is a Parisian firm which produces Russian-style teas and blends.

The company grew to be one of the largest Russian tea companies, with more than 50 teahouses in major cities.

Tea merchants there had blended and flavoured of teas from other countries so perfectly that these blends became known as Russian teas.

Russian tea was excellent quality because it was imported overland from India and China – rather than by sea - and was saved from the damages caused by the damp environment.

Russian tea traditions use a type of urn called a samovar, a heated metal container used to heat and boil water, which could hold and heat a teapot filled with tea.

“The Heart of Cognac meets the Heart of London” Rémy Martin’s very first pop-up Private Members Club opened for only two weeks between 25th November and 6th December at 19 Greek Street, Soho in London.

On the top floor, Rémy Martin XO cocktails created included ‘Old Fashioned Maison’ (XO, fig, Maison bitters, hazelnut and orange); ‘Side Car Excellence’ (XO, Cointreau Noir and lemon); ‘Midas Touch’ (XO Cointreau Noir, Lillet Blanc and jasmine); and ‘Le Centaure’ (XO, sweet vermouth, Campari, redcurrant, vanilla and clementine).

Having been cordially invited back for another evening at La Maison, I had the pleasure in interviewing Monsieur Augustin Depardon, Rémy Martin’s Executive Director.

This very mysterious blend of time, ageing, working with mother nature and the art of master blender results in so many different expressions and experiences of Rémy Martin cognacs; La Maison is a metaphor for all of this.

They want to give us an in-depth experience about what Rémy Martin cognacs are all about; La Maison has so many dimensions that touch so many senses.

Today is International Women’s Day, so what better way to show our support than by looking at the way women have shaped our industry over the years.

Women have always played a part in the drinks industry, from being the main producers of beer in Mesopotamia in 4,000BC; running the temperance movement which led to Prohibition; and working the illicit stills that were the birthplace of some of the greatest Scotch whiskies today.

Today, almost half the workforce in the spirits industry is female, and scientific evidence has shown that women naturally have better palates than men.

Here are a few ladies I greatly admire: Where would the wine world be today without Jancis Robinson?

She has a natural joy for life (no pun intended), and the few times I have met her she has had an incredibly positive outlook and has been a terrific influence on many young female distillers in the rum industry.
