Vegan Afternoon Tea at Lele's - Well Travelled Vegan

I recently visited Lele’s in East London for a wonderful afternoon tea with my mother.

I first came across Lele’s at Broadway Vegan Market where they had a stall and i bought one of their cakes.

Lele’s is a vegan cafe that serves breakfast, lunch, weekend brunch and afternoon tea in a small, bright yet quaint space in the heart of Clapton in Hackney.

For one Sunday each month Lele’s offers a delicious afternoon tea for £18 per person, which is what i’d booked for my mama and I. I was so looking forward to it as the cake that i’d tried at Broadway Market had set the bar and i knew that we were in for a treat.

If you’re looking for vegan afternoon tea then i’d recommend Lele’s.

The first place I moved to when arrived in London was Hackney.

It's gone through quite a few changes over the last year (and had already undergone a lot of change), and I never stop being surprised by the new places that have popped up since I last visited.

I discovered Lele's during ELCAF, an illustration and graphic novel event that was being held in the church a couple of doors over.

Inside of Lele's it's bright and beautiful, with plenty of greenery.

If you end up visiting, don't forget to pop into Pages of Hackney, a fantastically curated indie bookshop down the road.

But first, coffee, am I right?

Lele's make a damn good oat milk latte (one of the best I've had!)

and they also do coconut and almond milk, so basically all the good options.

There's fancy lattes like matcha and turmeric here too, as well as fresh smoothies and juices, if one of those is more your thing.

As well as switching from a veggie/vegan menu to a fully vegan one, Lele's have also had a refurb.

Indian food can usually be relied upon to look after vegetarians and Michelin starred Benares is a great example of this.

Without wanting to teach grandmothers about sucking eggs, South Indian cooking is really where you want to be for fantastic vegetarian food.

The entire mezze section is meat and fish-free featuring delights such as cauliflower with amba and tahini, charred marinated courgettes with smoked labneh and sweet potato in embers, almond tahini, date honey and spring onions.

Londonist writer Lydia Manch recommends the vegetarian dishes at Israeli restaurant Bala Baya - particularly the cauliflower: 'Middle Eastern restaurants are usually great at making vegetarian dishes the star of the menu - thanks to a generous way with big flavours like tahini, chilli, pomegranate and citrus.

Bala Baya's nailing the vegetarian offering, with the highlight being the caramelised cauliflower dish - charred and scattered with yoghurt and syrup, or stuffed into a pita at lunchtime with salad and pomegranate molasses.
