As Tom’s Kitchen, a small restaurant chain by the chef Tom Aikens, had opened a branch in Canary Wharf we met there to check it out and eat waffles galore.

By the 1950s the decline in manufacturing in the city, ships becoming too large to access this area and bombings from WWII meant that the docks became extremely run down.

I think possibly a lot of butter and whipped egg whites were involved… The blueberry compote was thick enough to have not made the waffles soggy and, coupling it with that billowy quenelle of cream, meant that I wasn’t left aching for something like maple syrup for dipping.

Emily ordered: The brioche French toast with caramelised waffles and cinnamon cream (£9).

Brunch and coffee for 2 (with service): £27 Public transport: Canary Wharf (tube station) or Canary Wharf (DLR) 11 Westferry Circus, London, E14 4HD I was invited to dine as a guest at Tom’s Kitchen, all opinions are my own!

Tom's Kitchen Canary Wharf - Great British Chefs

A restaurant, bar and deli in one, Tom’s Kitchen Canary Wharf showcases Tom Aikens’s relaxed menu to a new crowd of food lovers.

The food isn’t the only attraction.

The centrepiece bar is free-flowing, serving lavish, Champagne-based cocktails, while an outdoor terrace, which seats up to 80, makes a great summertime spot or watering hole for post-work drinks.

The restaurant’s midweek trade is mostly composed of business lunches and breakfasts, but at the weekend expect to see a broader range of clientele enjoying the restaurant’s legendary brunches – the eggs Benedict is particularly dreamy - or perhaps picking up a take-away treat from the deli.
