The Hunter-S

The Hunter S stands on the corner of Southgate Road & Tottenham Road in the heart of Hackney's De Beauvoir.

We jumped at the chance to take on this iconic building and set up a pub with great food and booze.

Don't get excited about the dinner at The Hunter S bar in Hackney ...

Bar review: Dinner at The Hunter S in Hackney is difficult to get excited over although the pub’s statement chandelier is worth a look.

My designer chum digs the pub’s statement crystal chandelier; less so its art-deco-meets-dead-fauna stance.

‘Was this named “Hunter S” after gonzo journo Thompson, he of The Rum Diary?

Or is it actually “Hunters?

It seems we all like a cool loo, and London’s bars and restaurants are poised to serve you every need… The Resident visits the quirkiest facilities in the capital, a #loowithaview or two, plus a few public loos repurposed into chic bars and gallery spaces 1 Nopi, Soho We all know a well positioned mirror can make a small space seem far greater but Yotam Ottolenghi has taken this to the extreme in Noti’s tiny toilets.

New Pub Review: The Hunter S., De Beauvoir Town | Londonist

If the vibe and offer of this newly opened De Beauvoir Town pub somehow remind you of Victoria Park's Hemingway pub, then you're picking up on the fact that the Hunter S. is the creation of Seven-Eighths, the same “collective of London-based hospitality professionals” behind said Vic Park boozer.

The mostly Chicago and delta blues soundtrack during our visit added to the great-place-to-slum-awhile atmosphere too.

A preferable time to slum awhile at the Hunter S. would be during Sunday lunch, which is graciously served well into the evening hours.

The Scotch egg with piccalilli and fresh green salad (£4.25) meets expectations.

The pub itself is a lovely little venue, beautiful high ceilings, with ornate light fittings, speakeasy music and a selection of interesting taxidermy decorate the walls.

Make sure you check out the toilets, the walls are adorned with pictures of naked men (well in the ladies loos)!

A new bar named after Hunter Stockton Thompson?

And is it even possible to compose a balanced review of a bar named after the greatest journalist that ever lived, a man who said that objective writing is ‘a pompous contradiction in terms’?

Is the nearby Daniel Defoe, for instance, stuffed with ‘Robinson Crusoe’ memorabilia?

The beer choice isn’t too bad – bottles include the Aussie Coopers, Brooklyn Lager and a few other Americans, although the three real ales (Doom Bar, Coaster and Pride) were all unavailable on my visit.

If you want to really pay tribute, eat a button of peyote, drink a bottle of whiskey, lock yourself in a hotel room for two days and shoot up the television set; if you want a nice meal with drinks in a delightful part of Islington, Hunter’s your man.
