A vegan Chinese restaurant has opened in London

Review analysis

We were pretty sad when vegan Mexican Gods, Club Mexicana ended their residency at Pamela bar in Dalston (although they’ve now moved up the road to the Spread Eagle in Homerton, wahoo!)

Lucky for us, the people behind Pamela’s have only gone and replaced our fave Mexican with a vegan Chinese!

They used to serve up their vegan wares at Behind This Wall in Hackney, but have now settled into Pamela, trading there from Tuesday to Saturday.

Find Mao Chow at Pamela, 428 Kingsland Road, E8 4AA, Tuesday to Saturday, from 6pm to 11pm.

Find out more about Mao Chow here and book a table at Pamela (the bar is small, but perfectly formed) here.

In what has been deemed “The Best thing to happen to East London since forever”, Club Mexicana has taken over the kitchen at Pamela in Haggerston.

Club Mexicana’s famous Tofish (almost entirely indistinguishable from actual fish but not in a gross way), topped with pickled red cabbage, avocado salsa verde and chipotle chilli oil served on a completely homemade taco.

Tender, juicy flakes of Seitan with Arbol Chilli Salsa, Refried Pinto Beans, Pink Onions, Radish and Coriander.

The Club Mexicana menu is ever expanding & evolving and I have noticed at least 3 new dishes since I visited!

Go visit Club Mexicana at Pamela (tell them I sent you, but be cool, yeah?)

Decatur at Pamela, Dalston, restaurant/bar review - Hackney Citizen

Among the varied set of outlets, pubs and restaurants on the Dalston end of Kingsland Road lies Pamela, a bar where upon entry an unassuming exterior gives way to an interior with a strange theme.

This could be annoying in the hands of others down the road (e.g. in Shoreditch) but is presented here with a winking charm, and I was eager to take my seat and evaluate the other of Pamela’s main attractions.

Over half of Decatur’s menu items are small plates ranging from £4 to £7.50, which will suit those grabbing a (bit of a) bite and a (lot of a) drink before heading to one of Dalston’s nightspots (sadly the dearly missed Power Lunches, which stood nearby, is no longer an option.)

Pamela’s drink selection covers craft beer (including Beavertown’s Neck Oil, which I would happily have replace water in the nation’s taps and reservoirs), shots, a full wine list and more, but their cocktail menu is where the focus is, not least in terms of Pamela-punning names.

With the taste of chocolate and sweetened bourbon on my breath, I saddled up and rode (actually walked) to Dalston Junction, off home to dream of oyster-shucking in the bayou, Pamela Anderson, and a return visit for more good eatin’.

My second trip to Pamela on Kingsland Road promised vegan Mexican food in the confines of this trendy-but-friendly bar, courtesy of new pop-up Club Mexicana.

A quick note on sauce: a trend I’ve noticed in pop-ups around these parts recently is the sourcing of condiments with a truly global purview – in this case, Valentina Salsa Picante Black Label hot sauce, made with Pequin pepper.

The Mexican street corn was an exciting first arrival to the table, and delivered rich, creamy cheesiness.

It’s clear from the taste that this is predominantly from the addition of nutritional yeast (a common substitute for cheese in vegan cooking which looks, bluntly, like fish food flakes) but along with the vegan cream and spicy sauce slathered on, it adds up to something cheesier than the sum of its parts.

By the time our second and final taco arrives, our table is a bit of a free-for-all: a bit of potato here, a drop of sauce there… This taco, or to be more accurate the jackfruit tinga masa pancake, perhaps crosses the line to being too unusually flavoured in its quest for beefiness.

Please note, Club Mexicana's Pamela residency has now finished.

This residency, at Dalston’s Pamela, has seen the Mexican vegan street food upstarts segue into an actual restaurant.

And the food is very, very good.

I’d probably do it anyway, though, because I enjoyed the food that much, vegan or not.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a list of great nights out to amend.
