Spanish sherry and wine bar at King's Cross London

Bar Pepito is an intimate Andalusian bodega specialising in the most exciting styles of sherry, tucked away across the courtyard from Camino King’s Cross.

Back when we opened in 2010 sherry was far from cool, however we’ve always believed in this brilliant drink and it’s this unwavering passion that proudly won us Time Out’s Bar of the Year.

Nowadays it’s cool to drink sherry, and we’re immensely proud that we were at the forefront of the ‘sherry revolution’, as featured in The Sunday Times Food Magazine Top 25 Bars in the UK.

Cheese and Biscuits: Bar Pepito, Kings Cross

Spanish cuisine is one of the things that London seems to have been doing very well of late; I've never had anything less than a great meal in all of the Brindisa outposts, and places like Dehesa and Salt Yard are consistently excellent, so I was understandably frothing with anticipation at the prospect of visiting London's first, dedicated sherry bar.

The key to a good restaurant or bar is not to try and be all things to all people, but to focus on what you're good at, and do just that one thing VERY well.

Not only do they have a wonderful selection of Spanish cheeses (albeit sweating slightly in the heat of the room - an airconditioning unit will be required to get them through the summer months I think), but they also have a qualified "Master Carver", who last night was expertly carving a leg of genuine pata negra into a plateful of delicate wafer-thin morsels.

The Tio Pepe Fino (£3.50 a glass) was as good as ever, but I also managed to try a glass of a sweeter 'Matusalem' (£5.50) which went very well with the cheeses.

Until then, I strongly urge you to visit Bar Pepito before the secret's out and it's packed to the rafters every night.

And the best way by far for Londoners to get a taste for its many charms is to visit one of the growing number of Sherry and tapas bars which have popped up right across the capital.

In stark contrast to Bar Pepito’s small but perfectly formed Sherry menu, Capote y Toros has London’s longest Sherry list with over 100 available by the glass.

Inspired by the traditional tapas bars in Andalucia and Barcelona’s Boqueria Market, this intimate, lively and busy bar in trendy Bermondsey should be on every Sherry aficionado’s itinerary.

Copita is the Spanish name for the traditional Sherry glass and all the Sherries featured on its list are available by the glass in servings of 75ml or 100ml, with by the glass prices beginning at just £3.75.

The Spanish staff, close set tables and marble-topped bar add to the authentic Andalucian experience.

reservations

Pepito is a fab little place (yes it is small); although despite some people talking about them not taking bookings they are happy to reserve a table up to an arrival time of 6.30, so for after-work, pre doing something else it's great.

When I arrived at 5.45 the only free space was the table for two I had booked and during our time there loads of people were turned away so basically: it's always full but there is Camino across the way (sister restaurant) which I'll try next.

Food is cold tapas - they don't have a kitchen, but it's delicious and pretty authentic: the tomato with garlic and olive oil on bread is an example of how great something so simple can taste when prepared fresh with good ingredients - takes no prisoners with the garlic - do try the tortilla: it is a big surprise as it's a kind of restructured dish served in a glass!

P) and we had a lovely Temperanillo/Cabernet mix, although the thing to drink is Sherry (if you like that kind of thing) they are very good at explaining the stuff and one can buy small flights so trying is great and not too pricey.

In short Pepito is fab: wonderful, fresh and vibrant - book for 6pm and eat everything on the menu ... Phil

Bar Pepito | Bars and pubs in King's Cross, London

Bars don’t get much smaller than Pepito, whose tall bar stools seat fewer than twenty people.

It’s the baby brother of the much larger Camino, across the way in Varnisher’s Yard, and while Camino is for crowds, Pepito is for couples or maybe foursomes at the most.

In this case, size doesn’t matter one bit -  the intimacy suits the experience, which is all about quiet communion with sherry and tapas.

The sherry list is not encyclopaedic, but it covers all the bases both with its regular list and with specials on the blackboards.

A great place to begin an evening’s revelry in nearby Granary Square – though Pepito’s so wonderful, you may not want to leave.
