Cubana’s organic chorizo and sweet potato croquettes are reason enough to head South of the river, served with fresh homemade tomato salsa.

Add frijoles negros (traditional Cuban black beans) and some red pepper hummus, and you’ve got a great selection of Cuban-style tapas, but we recommend a sharing platter to make things easier.

Next you must choose larger dishes from different sections – start with ‘Barbacoa’, referring to the native Cuban Indians’ method of cooking on an open fire (at Cubana, they use a robata grill).

Go for Parilla Mixta (chargrilled strips of marinated prime-aged British sirloin steak, free-range chicken breast and organic chorizo on a bed of seasonal leaves and fresh tomato, with homemade salsa verde), or have a look at the slow-cooked Cuban kitchen food.

Brandin themselves ‘the home of mojitos’, it makes sense to at least try the signature Cuban cocktail – and a Cubana speciality.

A “Master Chef” winner as a founder, bright interiors, friendly staff, multiple good locations and, of course, extremely delicious food.

Speaking about Mexican ones, we can add a special atmosphere, sparkling from joy.

All locations (by now 10) of this restaurant chain are suitable for every occasion; bring your kids and make good memories, spend some time with family, hang out with a noisy gang of pals.

You will enjoy the food here — demolish some real Mexican street food and save a room for desserts!

Colorful, funky and stylish, Wahaca Covent Garden is the most popular spot of the chain — it mixes Mexican and British vibes into an unforgettable cocktail.

food

Mussels came in a sauce where any hint of cider was overpowered by cream, but a plate of Spanish charcuterie with toasted Poilâne, cornichons and caperberries was fantastic: generous piles of chorizo, lean, chewy and intensely flavoursome lomo and deliciously salty jamón.

Inconsistency continued with the mains – pork, leek and ham hock pie with spring greens had a light shortcrust pastry lid covering a lip-smacking and moist filling, while a generous, well-grilled sea bass fillet on confit onion and fennel was again drowned by an excessively creamy sauce.

Lemon tart with undercooked pastry wasn’t a touch on the M&S version.

location

It’s been a busy year from my art consultancy with Mexican Street Food maestro’s Wahaca – so catching up on our latest installations – here’s one we did earlier… For the Kentish Town site (above the iconic Underground station) we wanted to support a local artist and at the same time find someone who could work sympathetically with this much-loved former T-shirt Factory space.

Our unanimous choice was Goodchild an up-and-coming artist who works on the street and in the studio in a bold iconic style.

Originally from Bristol, having grown up with that cities graffiti scene, Goodchild went on to study illustration in London and has lived in the Kentish Town area for a number of years.

The artist describes his work as abstract narratives or wordless stories told through symbols and in this case he tells the story on 5th Column the T-shirt printers, the company that was based there for 30 years and is still going strong but from another location.

Using limited colours, strong graphic shapes and patterns influenced by underground comics, Goodchild’s murals celebrate this unique space filled with references to this history and the printing process.
