Lemongrass Restaurant

Lemongrass Restaurant is the first Cambodian restaurant in UK. We serve delicious oriental Cambodian south east asian cuisine and fresh food, take away and party in Camden, London.

Cambodian Lemongrass Restaurant Camden London. Delicious Cambodian cuisine, fresh food, take away and party.

In those early years, Lemongrass was open for lunch, as well as for evening meals, and word quickly spread further afield via word of mouth and favourable newspaper reviews.

Among the food critics who visited and heartily ate there, were, Fay Maschler from the Evening Standard and Ken Livingstone the former London Mayor. It is hoped that you will decide to eat at Lemongrass.

Each dish will be brought to you straight from the wok; nothing is pre-cooked, so you can enjoy the delicious food at its best.

There will be a wait for your food at these busy times, and patience and understanding is appreciated.

However, good food is worth waiting for, and the food at Lemongrass is truly delicious.Whilst he cannot bring you fresh fish from the Mekong River, however, with the fresh ingredients sourced in this country and with the emphasis on simplicity and freshness, contrasting flavours and textures – a meal at Lemongrass will be an exciting culinary experience for you and your guests.

To begin with, we chose the leek cake, a cluster of leek deep fried in flour, with a pot of soy sauce on the side.

The cake was slightly flavourless without the soy, aside from the taste of frying. We also nibbled on some samosa-shaped little pastry parcels of mildly curried vegetables.

Pineapple also featured heavily in our main courses, both in the plate of mixed vegetables and the lemongrass chicken, which contained chunks of the fruit.

The taste of lemongrass was noticeabley absent, and though not unpleasant it was certainly unremarkable enough a dish to not be ordered again.

The lok luk steak had slightly more taste than the chicken however the pieces of beef were gristly and chewy. So far the food had been nothing like what I sampled in Cambodia and I wondered how easy it was for Lemongrass to get away with this lack of authenticity, being the only Khmer restaurant in London.

Today Thomas runs Lemongrass, to his knowledge still the only Cambodian restaurant in the UK.

Some online comments have questioned the authenticity of Lemongrass’s food, so I put the question directly to Thomas.

“Some say, ‘Lok Lak steak is never like this in Cambodia,’ but they don’t know that the real Lok Lak steak has to be fillet steak and cooked with butter.

His father, a businessman, aspired for him to learn English and Chinese, which is why Thomas came to the UK, but he also believed cooking was a necessary skill.

His son – from his marriage with first wife Marilyn – is currently at university, but Thomas would welcome him running Lemongrass one day.
