CHICKEN SHOP, KENTISH TOWN – A Spoonful Of Sugar

This year we decided to go to Chicken Shop in Kentish Town, part of Soho House Group’s new development on Highgate Road (which also includes Dirty Burger and Pizza East).

I ordered half a chicken (requesting dark meat only), crinkle cut fries and a side of coleslaw.

The crinkle cut fries were ace…perfectly seasoned, crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy inside and reminiscent of my childhood.

Soon, the table was littered with empty pots full of chicken bones, and we were all sitting back in our seats rubbing our rapidly expanding tummies.

It comes to the table in one huge pie dish and your waiter or waitress serves you a huge portion of it, along with a scoop of ice-cream.

Serving rotisserie chickens, marinated overnight, steamed then spit-roasted over charcoal, Chicken Shop doesn’t get much better.

Highly rated by TimeOut and TripAdvisor, this restaurant is a cut above other fast-food chicken places.

Soho House Group's Chicken Shop Was Closed by Food Standards ...

It has emerged this week that the Kentish Town branch of Chicken Shop, Soho House Group’s rotisserie chicken concept, was forced to close last summer in response to major concerns over health and safety violations described by council inspectors as posing an “imminent risk to health.”

The Evening Standard and Ham High reports that during an inspection last July, inspectors found evidence of a widespread rodent infestation, including mice droppings in the kitchen and on shelves stacked with takeaway boxes, as well as on food preparation equipment like chopping boards.

Further, the report noted that there was “urgent improvement necessary” to food handling practices to ensure standards of hygiene were met, and that the management of food safety practices — including education of staff and maintenance of systems and checks to ensure food served is safe to eat — required “major improvement”.

Following the resultant zero-star hygiene rating, the Chicken Shop operators agreed to a voluntary closure period to address the issues.

Chicken Shop is not the only high-profile London venue to fall behind in the food safety stakes: iconic Indian restaurant, Gaylord, was forced to close for a period last year due to “a serious infestation of cockroaches and poor maintenance of routine cleaning, resulting in a significant risk of food contamination”.

There’s also a DIRTY BURGER outpost under the same roof.

This marks our first west London outpost.

Chicken Shop, in the basement underneath the recently opened third branch of Pizza East, more or less opposite The Vine, is the latest opening from Nick Jones’s Soho House Group — and it is, let us not mince our words, a bloody marvel.

No-choice or small-choice menus are all the rage this year — but not many take the principle quite as beautifully far as Chicken Shop.

Nick Jones says of this place: “Chicken would be my last meal and so I wanted to get it exactly right.”

On Saturday, simple and delicious salad and chicken stew at Scutchers restaurant in Long Melford, Suffolk, at my sister Sarah’s 50th birthday party for 50 guests, cooked by the proprietor, our childhood friend Nick Barrett.

food

Because there was nothing to eat at the Chicken Shop.

Chickens turn and blacken on a medieval-looking wood-fired spit, a man in a chain-mail glove hacks them into quarters, and your order of a whole, half or quarter bird arrives without delay.

Spicy but not too much so, blackened but not excessively, it is, yes, finger-lickin’ chicken.

The price of the free-range chooks appears keen, but profit-boosting sides such as great crinkle-cut chips and aïoli mayo dip, red cabbage coleslaw with a more creamy than tangy dressing, and a salad of butter lettuce (old-fashioned floppy leaves rebranded) with avocado, redress the balance.

Wines are wittily bracketed into house, decent and good, red, white and rosé; not so amusing is the outrageous mark-up on the prosecco.
