Yet, while such (literal) insularity has bred a nation of seafarers, explorers, merchants and conquerors, the Sloth’s humble opinion has been that this maritime tradition is not adequately reflected in the classic British repertoire of seafood dishes.

Barring a few honourable exceptions, and outside of such outposts as the Hebrides, our food culture views fish as a starter (smoked salmon; oysters), a snack (seafood sticks; whelks) or a takeaway option (fish and chips).

While the Sloth obviously loves all of these, there’s something a bit strange about an island nation – and a small one, at that – which sees fish as somehow ancillary or subordinate.

Great fish, and no reason to believe that the other options on the menu – salmon, gurnard and seabass – wouldn’t have tickled the Sloth’s tastebuds in a similar fashion.

In any case, it would be peevish for the Sloth to regard such tribulations as anything more than mere trifles, when it ate such good fish, at such a reasonable price.

South American cuisine in London has never been more popular, so it’s no wonder that El Inca Plebeyo Restaurant and Bar is such a busy spot in Islington.

Serving Ecuadorian food and Latin American tapas, El Inca Plebeyo on Essex Road has an imaginative menu comprised of dishes like traditional ceviches, salads, hearty slow-cooked stews, freshly grilled fish and some amazing South American sides that you won’t find anywhere else in London.

Anyone following a specific diet will be pleased to hear that there are heaps of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options on the menu, all carefully crafted by El Inca Plebeyo’s head chef — Jorge Pacheco, from Ecuador.

The beauty of the Latin American tapas menu means that you can try out as many as them as you want by choosing multiple small dishes at once.

El Inca Plebeyo also has an outstanding selection of wines, beers and regional cocktails making it the perfect spot to start before a night on the Islington tiles!

Head to El Inca Plebeyo to see as Chef Jorge Pacheco takes the fine dining skills he gained from working at highend restaurants, including the Savoy Grill and Michelin-starred Maze, and applies them to South-American food.

The Ecuadorian chef serves food from his home country and its neighbours with a range of small plates to sample and larger mains to enjoy.
